  • Mixing 720p with 1080i???

    Hi

I am oflining a project on FCPv5 with the combination footage of 720p 29.97 shot on varicam and 1080i 60 shot on HDV (SONY Z1). I captured them via SDI out of AJ1200.

My question is when it comes to onlining I want to re-caprute the footage at HD quality. Do I need to upconvert the 720 footage to 1080 via the AJ1200 Deck.

What is the difference between the two format? if I capture them at their native format would I end up with different frame sizes?

    Thanks in advance

This workflow can be a nightmare.

Choose one codec and frame size for offlining.

Choose a second codec for onlining and stick to that.

I’d say cross convert all of the 1080i to 720P DVCproHD codec or what ever you have more of. If there is more DVCPRO cross convert, if there is more 1080i cross convert that.

There is not up and down conversion for HD sources, it should be refered to as cross conversion because you are not converting from SD to HD you are cross converting from HD to HD. It is much more difficult to cross convert than to up or downconvert.

I’m about to undertake a similar project.

The amount of footage from both the Varicam and Z1 will be the same.

    I am planning to
    – capture Varicam footage over firewire to DVCPRO HD
    – capture Z1 over firewire to 1080i HDV

Seems like the most logical/easy post flow would be to cut everything in DVCPRO HD.

What is the best way to cross convert my HDV to DVCPRO HD????

I’ve worked heaps in HDV but the addition of a Varicam on this project is a new and exciting challenge!
Any advice would be greatly apreciated.

    cheers
