“If someone else has a better way, I would be happy to know about it.”
Not necessarily better, but certainly easier. Here’s a demo of a very simple Happy Otter free tool that does this.

All script extensions in the HOS Free Tools library have now been recompiled for Sony versions of Vegas. Both the Magix and Sony versions are now included in the same download file as well as a tool icon.

Since I haven’t had any specific requests for Sony versions, converting those scripts has more or less been “on the back burner” of things to do. I’ll try to update them in the coming week.

February 19, 2020 at 6:10 pm in reply to: How to make Mercalli stabilization permanent on a clip?Hi Chris,
In all honesty, I have no idea. In fact, I’m not sure if I even have a copy of that original script any more. As you may or may not be aware, I’ve been developing a set of tools, HappyOtterScripts, which includes RenderEvents as one of its main scripts. RE is just the newest version of that old REATT script. More information can be found at https://tools4vegas.com/. HOS is in the final stages of beta testing and I hope to start selling licenses next month. Here is a screen grab of the RE dialog.
In any case, if you upload that old script somewhere, I’ll be happy to try it in V12 on my Win10 system.

Insert Freeze Frame is a script that inserts a freeze frame into a timeline event without use of Velocity Envelopes. Rather it creates a lossless PNG image, which is then inserted at the desired point. It now supports video with an alpha channel. The option to Auto Ripple now supports All Tracks, Markers, and Regions. Here is the dialog.
and a demo.

February 12, 2020 at 4:12 am in reply to: Is it possible to not select the file extension when renaming files in Vegas? If you have lots of files to rename, you might try the MediaRenamer tool in HappyOtterScripts. Here is a screen grab. It permits the bulk renaming of files with quite a few renaming options.
At the moment, HOS is still in beta through mid-March. You can download a trial here. https://tools4vegas.com/

Most likely–progressive. The best way is to use the free app MediaInfo. Here is an example of footage from a Panasonic FZ2500 showing the footage to be progressive.
You could also just drag the clip to the timeline and let Vegas set properties. You will see a dialog like this.
Of the two, use of MediaInfo is probably the most accurate.

February 1, 2020 at 6:51 am in reply to: Unable to render 4K vertical video in Vegas Pro 17Unfortunately, Vegas templates are quite limited in that most codecs require an individual template for each frame size/frame rate combination and as you’ve discovered some combinations are not supported. One alternative is Happy Otter Scripts at https://tools4vegas.com/. Here is a screengrab of a 2160 x 3840 render from just a still image since I don’t have such video footage.
You can see that the project settings and resulting render settings agree. Render settings are always the same as your project settings so there is no need for a unique template for each combination. Also, HOS uses the open source x264 encoder, arguably better than the built-in encoders. HOS is still in beta. You could also try Voukoder which also uses the x264 encoder which should be able to do the same thing.
