You answered your own question. Unless you are in features and TV, and even there the studios grind your rate to shreds– no negotiating anymore, you really can’t make a living.
I have people coming to me on the non-union jobs and they don’t want to even see my reel. They just want to know the rate– I call that rate trolling. They don’t want the best or even good, just the cheapest. Then they turn to someone else and say, ‘I found this guy who’ll do it for X, will you do it for X-50.’
We are competing with people who don’t know why or how to cut, but they have the tools so they are a DP or editor or fill in the blank. It’s just the wave of the future.

You can use the Technicolor preset when you are shooting h.264. If you are shooting RAW with ML, I don’t see a reason because when the footage is RAW, you can post process it any way you like.
By the way, all the Technicolor preset is really doing is decreasing contrast so you don’t blow out the highlights. If you are getting noise, do you have the correct ISO? Set in multiples of 160 for h.264– 160, 320, 640, 1250 etc. Do you need more lighting units to increase exposure?

And unfortunately FCPX doesn’t support midi so my Mackie Pro Control and extended faders won’t work like they did in FCP7. Apparently no work around either.

I was just curious, could you create and XML and have Davinci Resolve do the correct ratio output for you before going to the DCI program?

I do think it will help. Not only is it 14bit RAW, but because it is RAW you have much more latitude in the stop, like a film Negative. You can recover more of the highlights in color correction.
You are basically shooting CinemaDNG to a monolithic file. I then process this file with RawMagic on the Mac to a folder of sequentially numbered files that I bring into Resolve to color correct. You can also bring them into After Effects with ACR and process the raw there. Once I do a grade I save to my Quicktime format of choice.
Don’t change the file names of the folder RawMagic or what ever you will process the file with. Keep it the same this way you can relink at the end to the original Raw file folders for the final grade.

Reread your post, and still not sure why you are shooting at 1/100. I know you are not shooting stills and working in pal UK. That’s why I suggest 1/50. This sets the camera’s virtual shutter angle to 178 degrees, just shy of 180 degrees.
As for the banding, h.264 is 8 bit so you will see this stepping in color. If you are bold enough to install MagicLantern (I use it all the time) it shoots uncompressed RAW 14bit. 14bit= no banding.
It’s easy to install and allows you to manipulate the footage a lot in post. You can shoot everything else in 8bit h.264 but the trouble shots use the RAW.

Why are you shooting at 1/100 instead of 1/50 (for 1/48 and a 180 degree shutter angle)? Are you trying to get a more staccato look?

How are you converting or are you editing the h.264? If you are on a Mac, try converting with the free version of 5DtoRGB to ProRes. The program has an algorithm that will help clean up lines if it is a sensor issue.
