OT: SSD question
I’ve done a bunch of internet searching and am not getting a satisfactory answer, so I’m tossing this out to the group. I installed a Crucial MX200 500GB as a boot drive on my 2009 Mac Pro. I’m running Yosemite 10.10.4. I’m aware of the trim issues with SSDs, but I’m not sure this is the case.
What I’m seeing is a steady decline of free space on the drive. Over the course of several days, this will equal a few GB and it continues in that direction. No new files of any size are being saved to that drive in the interim, except for ongoing local mail and internet cache. Whatever is being saved would barely equal 1GB if even that.
Thoughts? Thanks.

I have DropBox and Copy installed, but everything synced right after the installation and no current activity has been happening.

Only thing I know of is OSX accumulating “Backup” which supposedly remains on drive until you run Time Machine (if you have been doing so). But in practice it sometimes remains even after a backup, trash, restart etc … Then mysteriously the space becomes available again.

Just so you know… Yosemite now supports Trim for 3rd party SSD’s. Apple has included a tool called trimforce. Just open a Terminal window and use the following command:
sudo trimforce enableThen reboot and that will get Trim working on your SSD. You’re correct it has nothing to do with your problem but just thought you might like to know. 😉As for your increasing file space, do you have FCP X Libraries on that drive and could it be that you didn’t copy optimized media when you restored the SSD but now as you open projects and work with them, optimized media is being generated in the background? (it’s a long shot but it’s all I got after Dropbox)

No, the FCP X libraries are on a different internal drive. I have the FCP X Back-ups folder on the SSD, but in total, it’s only about 215MB in size.

I’ve checked for that but can’t find anything. Searching the internet seems to mainly talk about this being a case with laptops and not desktops. I couldn’t find any file that matches the name listed. Any particular file name I should be looking for?

May not be related to your issue, but I once found large amount of cache files stored by DaVinci Resolve in the .gallery folder. It might help to look at your SSD with something that can see hidden files. Maybe by going into target mode and using another computer to look at your SSD.
Also, I’ve found in some instances emptying trash doesn’t seem to give back space.

I could see emptying the trash not giving back space of its a bunch of hard link media. That is media used by multiple files which is often created by FCP when duplicating or consolidating media and libraries. It duplicates the files, but doesn’t take up additional space. So the space isn’t given back until the last file utilizing those bits is trashed.

Dropbox will cache files. You can empty this by using the go to command and pasting this:
/Users/yourusername/Dropbox/.dropbox.cache
Note: type your user name exactly as it is in system settings. Don’t leave it as above

Was at a (cyl MacPro) system today with a similar problem. Found 48 GB of Attic files in the user called ‘Shared’ where Avid stores its Attic by default.
Not sure of this is relevant, but thought I’d throw it in here anyway.
