OT: SSD question

When I notice space disappearing, I run Grand Perspective. When I do so, I typically take a snapshot of the display screen (shift command 4 – drag the snapshot selection) and then I can visually compare what my drive space looks like today verses what it looked like perhaps last week.
It’s really useful for identifying large or growing drive space usage blocks that might be hidden away.

FWIW – I’m seeing this same behavior on two different Mac Pro towers – one with a Crucial and the other with an OWC. The commonality is that they both have 10.10.4 installed. The OWC installation is more recent and I’ve just started to monitor that. Nevertheless, it’s showing signs of doing the same thing. So, I wonder if 10.10.4 is the culprit.
Out of curiosity, who out there is using a third party SSD in a Mac Pro tower running 10.10.4 as the boot drive? If so, are you seeing the same thing by any chance?

I haven’t used Grand Perspective, but I’ve used Omni Disk Sweeper to see what’s eating up all my HDD space. If run from an Admin account it will also find hidden files (which might be the cause of the bloat). Little more info in the link below about how to get the most out of it.

I’m using an OWC Mercury Accelsior E2 PCI Express SSD as the boot drive for my 2010 Mac Pro tower with 10.10.4 but I haven’t really noticed because I’m not looking for it. I will monitor drive capacity from day to day and see if it’s filling up and report back.

Are you running Premiere on the same system? Media Cache render files defaulting to the system drive vs a assigned 2nd or SAN drive?
I’ll try and update one of my older Mac Pro’s to 10.10.4 with 3rd party SSD (Samsung) and see if I have the same issue.

Yes, I am. And yes, cache is all to another drive.

Just following up. Installed 10.10.4 on 3rd party SSD. Left it running for 2 days and drive space never filled up or changed. Not sure what else I could test for you on this system to see if it can reproduce your problem.

Over the last few weeks I’ve been monitoring this on a couple of different machines. At OWC’s suggestion I’ve run several different virus scans using different tools and everything looks clean. Lately this has stabilized although I still see some minor fluctuation.
Something to note is that the greatest swing came during the CC2015 updates. I noticed in certain views of the system that hidden disk image files would show up and these were all related to some of the Adobe app installers. So my suspicion right now is that either these hidden files were not completely flushed out of the drive or that space was reserved and being held.

Yea, I’ve been monitoring for about a week now and I see no significant change in the space on my OWC SSD. I don’t have Adobe CC installed (I still use CS5.5) so no mysterious downloads in the background for me. 😉 i suspect CC2015 might be the culprit as well.
