Who knows what they’re going to do or what the new machine will even look like. It’ll most likely be that “Made In the USA” machine Tim Cook was speculating about on NBC last week since they build so few of them.
As I said in the my recent article, the only glitch we’ve had with Windows is the XDCAM QT files not being read and of course, it’ll see the SAN slightly differently so we have to reconnect media when we switch platforms. But that is one of the beauties of being cross platform with the software. You literally can purchase thousands of configurations now instead of just the dozens from one manufacturer.
HP, Dell and ProMax are all good machines if you go Windows.

I keep hearing about this but honestly, when we color grade anything via our AJA or BMD output devices to our Flanders Scientific monitors, what we see when we export H264 files is pretty much exactly what we see on our external monitors.
If you’re relying on your computer monitors to accurately show you what the final QT output will be when color grading, that seems to be where most folks have issues. There’s two seasons of our PBS Series “This American Land” up on YouTube and those QT files are pretty darn close to what we output for broadcast.

For us Premiere Pro is VERY slow to quit. Can take 4 minutes. The app disappears, but the menu stays on the top of our Mac screens for up to 4 minutes until it finally disappears.

Very small amount of RAM and storing media on your boot drive are two big culprits to bad operation with any NLE software.

Can you give me a rough idea of what a 48 gb drive is worth?”Honestly not sure what the current going rate is for it. Prices fluctuate so quickly these days, I really have no idea. It’s significantly less than what we paid at the end of last year I know that. Email them and ask is my best suggestion.

That’s not what I’m saying at all. I’m just saying the bigger config is possible even with the iMac. It’ll be able to handle your project better IF you can get the larger config. With the config you currently have running, I’m afraid you’re going to continue to run into problems that are more due to your system than Premiere Pro itself.
BTW 16GB RAM is all Apple recommends, but OWC sells 32GB RAM kits for the iMac that make a huge difference in performance.
Just trying to be helpful as you have a VERY large project and I’m afraid your system is not well set up to handle it.

“We’re running the same config but with 32GB RAM and that 48TB SAN directly connected via Ethernet through a Small Tree Thunderbolt box. I’m converting all my Mac Pro suites to iMacs over the next few months because it’s working so well.

You have a single 1TB disc and you’re capturing ProRes to it? My guess is you’re dropping frames so the capture is aborted. It’ll capture / playback for a while, but at some point, a single media drive is going to drop frames. That’s why so many of use media arrays with 2 to 24 or more drives in a single RAID.
