If it’s DV50 NTSC then the standard would be lower field first.
If it’s DV50 PAL then the standard would be upper field first.
If your timeline is NTSC HD 1080i then you’ll be upper field first.

Computer based display such as a Dell is all you’re going to get in that range. I would never use one for video output myself, but some folks have been successful with them.
We run only Flanders Scientific (FSI) in our shop. Perfectly accurate across all suites.

Yep. Two Panasonic AJ-1400’s, dual Sony HDV decks, Sony J3-902 Beta player and yes, we still use the trusty UVW-1800 from time to time. With documentary editing, we’re constantly using them.
Also, we provide digital transfer and archive services for clients now too so the decks are pretty priceless for that. I send in all my decks every year around NAB time. It’s a good yearly reminder to send the decks in. Fortunately we have a great service facility not far from the shop.

ProRes is processor intensive and in fact all Rendering is processor intensive. Do you have any filters at all on the video, like color correction? That will slow you down exponentially.
I have found that CS6 renders much faster than CS 5.5

We run the UltraSharp models here, they’re awesome. They have a more expensive line around $500 and a cheaper line around $250 – $300. Look at Costco.com for some of the best prices if you’re a member.

Just about any computer screen is compatible with the laptop. Just look for the resolution numbers. I always look for 1920×1200 minimum resolution.

If you have two thunderbolt ports or a mini display port+ thunderbolt port. You won’t be able to daisy chain two thunderbolt displays together.

If your timeline is interlaced, you need to create an MPEG-2 file that matches your original timeline. So if it’s interlaced Upper Field First, then your MPEG-2 file has to match.

[Robert Brown] “From what I understand you need to set OSX into line out – NOT AJA – and then set PPro to default out. I tried various settings and this seemed to be the only way I could get audio reliably out of PPro. If set some other way most of the time the audio was muted. “
OS X System Preference Audio Out to anything BUT AJA.
In Premiere Pro. Audio Hardware > AJA

[Greg Jones] “I’m really loving Premiere and Aja. Aja and Adobe really do need to do something about tape capture and layback, however. I’m currently using FCP 7 to digitize then Editing in Premiere. Not very elegant but it works.
“We capture via AJA and FCP 7 as it just works. But for tape layback, we can do that just fine with a BMD Extreme 3D card and Premiere Pro.

Getting way off topic, but Walter, have you done any sort of articles on cross platform workflows with Adobe? We have issues there relating primarily to the shared storage and how the Macs and PCs see the storage differently requiring us to continuously be relinking media when we shouldn’t have to.

“Christopher, the problem with this thread is you really haven’t told us what the specific problems are and you’re just saying the software is unprofessional because you’re having this one problem. Obviously through all of your recent posts, you just started using PPro and it’s a pain in the ass to get working correctly. Took us about 4 months to really get it working the way we wanted it to.
But we ran into ALL sorts of audio issues in the beginning that were a combination of user error and a hardware / software mismatch.
So in this particular case, all the other folks in this thread are simply asking for specifics about your system and what exactly is happening so they can offer their advice. You’ve started so many threads, folks don’t read all of them to find out your specific hardware config.
So if you could, just post your hardware config here in this thread and let us know precisely what is happening and maybe we can offer some advice.
If you’re just starting this thread to say Adobe Premiere Pro is Unprofessional and not a quality editing piece of software, well that’s your personal opinion and you’re certainly entitled to that. I would be the first to disagree however as our experience with the tool has been quite professional. It’s not perfect, but it’s getting the job done day in / day out in our facility.
So if you want some help with this particular problem you’re having, just give us some good hardware and workflow information and perhaps we can figure out why you’re having all of these audio problems. Thanks!
