As suggested already, try the Export button instead of the Queue and see if that goes.
All I can think of is that there is something in the timeline that Premiere Pro doesn’t like.

You don’t need to render each shot separately for Resolve. Just render the entire film out and the colorist can use Scene Detect to break the film back up for coloring. We do this for all our shows coming out of Premiere to Resolve.
If there’s a particular scene or scenes that require more handles on either side for a special effect or something like that, we just re-export those individual scenes and re-assemble in Premiere. It’s quite easy.

January 26, 2013 at 3:32 pm in reply to: Premiere hangs up when using the effects panelAre the photos in CMYK color space by any chance? Check that they are in RGB first off.
Then see if you can drop the file size at all to help. 6MB is fairly large for a photo, I try to drop the file sizes down when possible. Say a photo is 4000 x 2500 and I’m working in 720p space. I’ll drop frame size of the photo down to something like 2500 wide so I still have zoom / pan capability but the file size itself is smaller

Your estimate goes something like this:
Based on the information provided, I estimate this will take X hours/days/weeks to complete the project. Estimated price is $Y
Any additional hours/days beyond this estimate due to additions / changes by the client will be charged at $X/hour $Y/day.
That’s how I approach all projects honestly because EVERY project has unknowns.

Oliver so far so good here. We transitioned around May / June of 2012 and honestly we’ve yet to run into any sort of issue caused by project size / media amount.
We’re still running on our 48TB SAN from Small Tree, up to 8 workstations connected at any given time, CS6 on all systems and nary a worry so far. We did the entire second season of This American Land for PBS on there with each episode running anywhere from 20 – 40 hours of raw material over 13 episodes. Editors pulling from each others shows as necessary. We have more documentary projects and reality / docu-series type of work lining up for 2013 and all of it will go into PPro.
The big key…… let me say that again….. THE BIG KEY to making large projects work in PPro is media management. It’s completely different than what you’re used to in FCP 7. PPro makes you do a lot of media management yourself. On the front end, it’s a little bit of a pain when you get started into the application but the more you use it, the more we appreciate that at the end of a project, we simply need to move one folder over to Archive an entire project.
I cannot recommend enough Richard, Robbie and Jeff’s book “An Editor’s Guide To Adobe Premiere Pro.” This should actually come standard with every copy of CS that’s sold to someone switching from another NLE. Get the media management chapter down and follow Richard’s plan.
Also accept that you CAN work completely natively with everything during your rough cut phase. Do NOT spend wasteful time converting everything under the sun to a single format / frame rate until you have a locked cut. Once we accepted that workflow really does work, we have become much more efficient in our projects. I documented our current workflow here on the Cow recently.

January 15, 2013 at 3:40 am in reply to: What’s everyone doing to find new biz in 2013? This old dog needs some new tricks…I hired my first Director of Corporate Development and Marketing to kick off 2013. I was VERY lucky to have precisely the right person I’ve wanted for my company become available. That’s the biggest key when it comes to someone like that, you MUST find the right person.
Other than that, networking events are always great, User Groups like our Atlanta Cutters and Georgia Production Partnership are good to keep your name in front of people. Definitely revive dormant / older contacts and say hello.
Use a service like Mail Chimp (it’s free!) to send out a professional looking newsletter at least quarterly to all your mail contacts. At least keep your name in front of everyone and using a service like this lets you track who opened it to see if your message is being received.
Beyond all of that, I’m developing my own original content both for interactive and traditional media. Basically remove the client from the equation when possible.
Best of luck to you in 2013!

We always show the extra work on the invoice and then put a discount of the same amount below it. This way the client knows when we had to put in extra time.
If I have to do extra work because I did not plan the time accordingly, they don’t get charged.
If I have to do extra work because of changes on the client side, they do get charged. Oftentimes not the entire amount.
But by showing extra hours all along, the client can visually see how much more time we have to put in from time to time so there’s no shock when THEY make a change that requires extra hours and thus a higher invoice.

We create master files in ProRes for the time being. We’ve made a few tests in Avid’s DNxHD codec as well and they are very very similar in quality.
We do the exact same native workflow through the entire pipeline until final render. We switch the Video Previews in the timeline over to ProRes and also make the final file a ProRes.

Actually, this old FCP tutorial series I did on Travel Mattes shows the basics of how the masks work. You can apply the same concept in PPro / AE.

That’s just using keyed masks that wipe on and off. VERY easy to do.
You key the video onto the masks, which are the blocks. Then you wipe the blocks on and off to create the effect. You might have the blocks moving a little to enhance the effect.
I’d create all the masks in Photoshop and then simply wipe them on / off.
Might be easier to do this in AE since it’s generally easier to copy / paste keyframes in that app than PPro.
