June 17, 2013 at 12:48 am in reply to: The COW seems slow. Is this good news or bad?You have so many generalities in your post I can’t respond to them individually.
Business is tough. So get tougher. You have to come up with different strategies to market yourself. Create your own work. Drop your prices. Find new avenues. Whatever. This has NEVER been an easy industry.
I don’t lose faith. I get angry and look to see where I can pivot to keep expanding our markets. We’re in territories now I never imagined my company would be in terms of what we’re producing. Yeah the tools are cheap and it makes me incredibly happy I haven’t upgraded in a few years or ever purchased a camera until now. I’m in a perfect position to exploit the low cost of all these tools as we move forward.
It’s still not easy but I’m still plugging away knowing that this industry will be in a constant state of change forever more and he who can continually change with the market is the one who will survive. And he who can constantly evolve and adapt their marketing strategy is the one who will grow their client base and distribution.

June 16, 2013 at 9:18 pm in reply to: The AMD FirePro is optimized for Adobe Creative Cloud[Walter Soyka] “One could use GTXs for 8-bit displays and faster rendering, and use a video I/O card for 10-bit HD-SDI monitoring (redeeming the Mac platform per above).”
I don’t know anyone who requires 10bit out of their graphics card. Nobody I know or work with. We just use the GPUs for the render power.
Our 10bit displays are driven by AJA and Blackmagic products.
Sorry, we’re not gamers here, just video production professionals

Adobe Premiere Pro forum is definitely hopping. Not sure on some of the others.
Agree that Twitter/ Facebook are getting forums as well and some have good traction, others not so much and generally. It’s hit or miss though with the information. The Cow for me is still the best source of good info for much of what I do.
Of course part of the problem with some of the forums is all this anger if you “don’t agree with me you’re an idiot.” Just go look at the Adobe Creative Cloud forum. Small group of people endlessly going on and on and on and on and if you don’t agree with them, you’re wrong and someone who must be getting paid by Adobe. I gave up on that forum.

[Alex Udell] “Hey Walter…
thanks for the chime in. Agree whole heartedly with your philosophy on this.
I was merely pointing out that many ppl conflate Dynamic Link as somehow performance enhancing realtime playback for AE or tying it into the Mercury playback engine. That’s all.”
Actually my apologies, I misread your original statement. I thought you said it was THE only method of communication, but your post was spot on. Sorry about the confusion and good info.

[Alex Udell] “Dynamic link is only a method of connection between PPro an AE.
It in no way, mercury engine, or otherwise improves playback performance.”Yes and no. For the most part we simply send timelines into AE, do our work and then render it out in AE. Bring that render into PPro.
Now when we need to make changes to something, simply change it in AE, re-render with the same name, instant update in PPro.
That works for about 90% of what most folks use dynamic link for. But good info in your post.

[Edan Cohen] “I was recently editing a commercial on my PC running PPro. I asked a friend to add some AE stuff to my final edit. He has a Mac Pro. His computer crashed a lot running AE and Premiere. “
Definitely not our experience here. If it was crashing a lot on the Macs we’d be in trouble since that’s the bulk of our workstations right now.

[Alex Rod] “Ok, So after 4 months now on PPro (changed from Final Cut) I’ve come to the conclusion that though it’s a nice software, Premiere Pro IS NOT a professional software.”
The software doesn’t make anything professional. It’s the artist driving the software. I have had my company cutting on Final Cut Pro for 11 years and last year we made the switch to PPro. In our experience, we’re over 25% more efficient on PPro than FCP.
[Alex Rod] “I really don’t want to move to avid, but at this point, do I have a choice?
“Sure you have choices. We have FCP 7, FCP X, Avid Symphony and PPro in our own shop. PPro is our software of choice, but sometimes the clients will request Avid or FCP. Or sometimes a project comes in already started in one of those so we finish in the same.
Is someone forcing you to use PPro or do you just want it to work like FCP? I can tell you it doesn’t.
[Alex Rod] “(dynamic link, playing timeline without bugging down completely among a few other issues like Media Encoder crashes)”
Do you know when and when not to use dynamic link? We VERY rarely use it because there are much more efficient ways to achieve the same result without performance lag. You need a pretty beefy system to get the most out of dynamic link especially if you’re trying to do a lot with it.
You need to figure out the best workflow for Premiere Pro before you can truly evaluate it. Is Premiere Pro professional? I can say the artists who work in my 5 edit suites are certainly professionals turning out professional projects on a daily basis since June of last year with CS6.

June 12, 2013 at 10:30 pm in reply to: If I have a choice, what’s the fastest codec to use?Good luck with that, hope they can help. We’re delivering broadcast shows, corporate projects and now documentaries with PPro for a year now. Good solid app and CC is going to be even better.
