“As long as you’re following proper media management practices in Premiere Pro (which are different than FCP) you should be good to go. Honestly don’t know what else to offer without knowing your setup.
I also use an 8TB FW800 RAID at home on my 3 year old iMac. I only see lags with GoPro and AVCHD footage on that system and when I have a lot of filters applied.

Earlier you said you’re playing video from your main hard drive. Should never do that, even with FCP. You want your media on a dedicated drive or RAID.
We edit in every codec under the sun and the only times we get lags with Premiere Pro are ProRes and GoPro native footage. That’s all playing off a 100TB server. And we’re editing with iMacs, Mac Pro and a Dell tower.
No media is stored on the local computers.

Small Tree ThunderNet boxes with 10gig cards and then connect to Thunderbolt. Onboard iMac Ethernet port is very unreliable for editing. We’re also running the new Titanium series from Small Tree and geez, the dang thing is fast…..

It’s with 10gig off the shared, FW800 direct and even SAS/SATA direct connect running 550MB/s. It’s an Adobe issue, not a storage issue. I’m hoping this is addressed with Premiere Pro CC

You can share media all you want. We do it all the time especially when cutting promos for a show or two editors working on the same show.
What you CANNOT share right now is a project across two systems. That is, two editors open the exact same project at the same time.
However, Adobe Anywhere used locally changes this. You can now Sync two projects together just by using the Adobe Anywhere function. I have not installed or tried this yet, but that’s what I’m told.

That’s an After Effects thing when you have Comps nested.
Premiere Pro might do that if you have one Sequence Nested inside another, but I’ve not tried that.

No, I mean here at our shop. We’re replacing older Mac Pros with newer iMacs and seeing really nice performance jumps. The Dell PC is also very solid.

we are switching to all iMacs here because the performance is so good now, upwards of 350 – 500MB/s via 10gig. But the system works on towers to laptops.
Only playback issues we have are when Premiere Pro is on dual computer screens, it’ll drop frames constantly. No clue why, but bring the interface back to a single screen and that goes away. Happens on everything from our iMacs to 12 Core Mac Pro to 8 Core Dell PC.
So when it’s time for final mastering, we just bring the interface back to a single screen.

You’re talking shared storage. We run Small Tree Communication ethernet based shared storage here. Been running it over 5 years now. Started with three machines connected and now we have 27 ports all running back to 100TB of storage.
Really easy to set up and inexpensive too compared to other solutions out there. Their banner is right here in this forum, the green one. Contact em and tell them what you’re trying to accomplish and they’ll get you set up.
Best part is, there’s no management software so we can easily add new folks to the network by simply creating a new username. Clients come in with their laptops and we can have them connected to our entire 100TB system in less than 2 minutes.
