Connecting Edit Suites
Hi,
I’m looking for some advice on sharing footage between edit suites. I have 2 suites (both Premiere Pro CS6 running on Mac OSX Mountain Lion) which can currently share files with each other via the Shared options. However what I want to do is have a third machine which we store all the raw footage on and have the 2 edit suites connect to it to edit. They won’t be working on the same projects but it will allow us to have only one stock footage folder instead of each suite having its own (which differs slightly to the other). Any advice would be much appreciated.

You’re talking shared storage. We run Small Tree Communication ethernet based shared storage here. Been running it over 5 years now. Started with three machines connected and now we have 27 ports all running back to 100TB of storage.
Really easy to set up and inexpensive too compared to other solutions out there. Their banner is right here in this forum, the green one. Contact em and tell them what you’re trying to accomplish and they’ll get you set up.
Best part is, there’s no management software so we can easily add new folks to the network by simply creating a new username. Clients come in with their laptops and we can have them connected to our entire 100TB system in less than 2 minutes.

we are switching to all iMacs here because the performance is so good now, upwards of 350 – 500MB/s via 10gig. But the system works on towers to laptops.
Only playback issues we have are when Premiere Pro is on dual computer screens, it’ll drop frames constantly. No clue why, but bring the interface back to a single screen and that goes away. Happens on everything from our iMacs to 12 Core Mac Pro to 8 Core Dell PC.
So when it’s time for final mastering, we just bring the interface back to a single screen.

Hey Walter,
I’m using 10GBit ethernet for shared storage with MacPros and Atto’s 10GBit cards, courtesy of Mr. Zelin. How are you adding iMacs? Are they just Gbit ethernet?

Is it true that Premiere cannot share media between two or more systems? I’ve heard this repeated by several different people who are in the position of recommending the next NLE to replace FCP 7. Since you use Premiere in your shop, I figure you would know first hand if this is true or not.

You can share media all you want. We do it all the time especially when cutting promos for a show or two editors working on the same show.
What you CANNOT share right now is a project across two systems. That is, two editors open the exact same project at the same time.
However, Adobe Anywhere used locally changes this. You can now Sync two projects together just by using the Adobe Anywhere function. I have not installed or tried this yet, but that’s what I’m told.

Hi Warren.
We are also going the 10Gig Ethernet route via Bob Zelin! We have yet to install, but will in the next 30 days. Wanted to ask you how it is going?Do you have the dual screen issue that Walter is experiencing with Zelin’s 10Gig set up? As for iMacs at 10Gig speeds, we are planning to use the Thunderbolt to 10Gig adapters for the iMacs so we get 10Gig speeds with them.
Would love to hear about your experience WITH 10Gig. I have been extremely impressed with Bob Zelin and we are very excited to get this system in place ASAP!

10Gig E has been great here. Very fast. I’m using Mac Pros so no iMacs yet. I have still been using FCP 7 as I investigate Premiere CS6. I also have a Avid Symphony in the mix and that works great too. I’ve imported a view projects cut in FCP7 to Premiere CS6. I haven’t seen the Dual screen issue Walter mentioned, but then again, I don’t use Premiere as much as Walter does.

It’s with 10gig off the shared, FW800 direct and even SAS/SATA direct connect running 550MB/s. It’s an Adobe issue, not a storage issue. I’m hoping this is addressed with Premiere Pro CC
