Is this a professional software?
Posted by Alex Rod on June 12, 2013 at 6:31 pmOk, So after 4 months now on PPro (changed from Final Cut) I’ve come to the conclusion that though it’s a nice software, Premiere Pro IS NOT a professional software. It’s filled with bugs, crashes all the time and doesn’t truly allow you to use some of its main features without crashing or bugging down. I REALLY WANT TO BE CONVINCED OTHERWISE. (dynamic link, playing timeline without bugging down completely among a few other issues like Media Encoder crashes)
I really don’t want to move to avid, but at this point, do I have a choice?
I am running the latest versions of all adobe softwares.
MacPro Mid 2012
OSx.8.2
32GB memorySomeone please give me a reason to stay with Premiere Pro

June 12, 2013 at 6:34 pmDo you have a supported GPU for hardware acceleration of the Mercury Playback Engine? That might alleviate a few of your issues.

June 12, 2013 at 6:40 pmAs Kev said, your hardware will make a huge difference in what you can do with PrPro. I find it very capable with almost everything that I used to do in FCP.
When using DynLink with AE be sure to set your AE comp resolution to 1/2 or less for smooth playback in the PrPro timeline and then set it back to full when doing the final encode.
I had about 6 months of really crappy experience with the PrPro performance until I did a complete system overhaul from the ground up and installing CS6 before anything else. After that it has been running fairly smooth. You can diagnose your install by loggin into the root user account firing up PrPro and put it through it’s paces. My gurss is you will see better performance in the root than in your own profile. You can also create another user acct to do the test if you are not comfortable with the superuser acct.

June 12, 2013 at 6:52 pmI’m getting a card in the next month with that capacity. Let’s see how it turns out. I would hate to have to go to media composer, but if this doesn’t work, I’ll have no other choice.

June 12, 2013 at 9:36 pmoh. well if you don’t have a GPU like a Quadro 4000 you are really missing out.
I work in a professional facility with 2 seats of Premiere Pro CS 6
and it has performed very well for a year now. -

The software doesn’t make anything professional. It’s the artist driving the software. I have had my company cutting on Final Cut Pro for 11 years and last year we made the switch to PPro. In our experience, we’re over 25% more efficient on PPro than FCP.
[Alex Rod] “I really don’t want to move to avid, but at this point, do I have a choice?
“Sure you have choices. We have FCP 7, FCP X, Avid Symphony and PPro in our own shop. PPro is our software of choice, but sometimes the clients will request Avid or FCP. Or sometimes a project comes in already started in one of those so we finish in the same.
Is someone forcing you to use PPro or do you just want it to work like FCP? I can tell you it doesn’t.

Do you know when and when not to use dynamic link? We VERY rarely use it because there are much more efficient ways to achieve the same result without performance lag. You need a pretty beefy system to get the most out of dynamic link especially if you’re trying to do a lot with it.
You need to figure out the best workflow for Premiere Pro before you can truly evaluate it. Is Premiere Pro professional? I can say the artists who work in my 5 edit suites are certainly professionals turning out professional projects on a daily basis since June of last year with CS6.

June 13, 2013 at 2:44 amI was recently editing a commercial on my PC running PPro. I asked a friend to add some AE stuff to my final edit. He has a Mac Pro. His computer crashed a lot running AE and Premiere.
I didn’t dig too much into his system but we both agreed that the problem lay with the Mercury Engine.
I think Premiere CS6 has crashed on me maybe twice in the last year. I honestly can’t remember the last time it crashed on me.

Dynamic link is only a method of connection between PPro an AE.
It in no way, mercury engine, or otherwise improves playback performance.A few methods to help with PPro and AE integration are:
a) Render and Set Proxy In AE from you dynamic link comps
b) Render in AE with XMP and project linking embedded via Render Queue and replace on PPro TImeline. This gives you quick access to edit original.
c) Copy and paste from PPro to AE to start your AE comps, as opposed to using Dynamic link at all.hope that helps some…

Definitely not our experience here. If it was crashing a lot on the Macs we’d be in trouble since that’s the bulk of our workstations right now.

Now when we need to make changes to something, simply change it in AE, re-render with the same name, instant update in PPro.
That works for about 90% of what most folks use dynamic link for. But good info in your post.

June 13, 2013 at 1:35 pmHey Walter…
thanks for the chime in. Agree whole heartedly with your philosophy on this.
I was merely pointing out that many ppl conflate Dynamic Link as somehow performance enhancing realtime playback for AE or tying it into the Mercury playback engine. That’s all.
