[Ric Christoferson] “I’m certain you will get a QT 7 Pro key if you upgrade to FPC 5 but that could be as high as $600.00 for the upgrade. “

It’s never been that high before, but I suppose there’s a first time for everything.

As noted in another thread, Apple holds their press event at 11am Pacific time Sunday at NAB. I would suggest just waiting until Apple makes their presentation and then y’all can make all the comments you want about what will work with what and how much it will all cost.

[Steve Connor] “If you don’t like it, vote with your feet and close the door on your way out! “

I’ll second that thought. Nobody has ever forced me to purchase a Mac, I just do because they work and I earn good money running them. But I’m free to purchase pretty much anything I want.

  • Firewire 800 drives work if they are dual drive units like the G-RAID and the LaCie Big Disk Extremes. Those have two drives in each unit which are striped together.

[bclark] “Also, what’s your recomendation for a cheap card to get ntsc playback with 8/10 bit uncompressed graphics and mostly dv footage? “

Either the AJA Io LA or the Aurora PipePro. The Aurora has probably the best uncompressed codecs in the business.

  • Simply change the codec to Uncompressed 8bit (or 10bit) and change the frame size to 720×486. BUT without fast enough drives you won’t get any realtime playback of your files, nor will you be able to play them out to a monitor in uncompressed without at least an AJA Io.

[bogiesan] “Media has been reported to simply disappear off drives. The topic hasn’t come up recently but it rages every now and then. We have no idea what causes it or where the media goes but the directory shows no record of the media files and recovery applications do not find any directory bits to indicate the file ever existed, which is clearly impossible. But that’s what has been reported by folks who know how to recover stuff. “

I can honestly say in four years of cutting with FCP on about 7 different workstations, I’ve never had media simply disappear. Render files get lost all the time when a drive gets moved from one workstation to another, but never captured media.

As for a fail safe plan, get a bunch of cheap Firewire 400 drives and some backup software. Back up everything you do to those drives at night.

You can get answers to simple questions like this a lot faster by using the Final Cut Pro Help tool.

File > Export > Using Quicktime Conversion > Still Image. Then select the format

They’re both 133 cards. AJA just announced a slew of features that have been unlocked in the K2 this week. Read about them in the AJA forum.

Ok, first off, never re-install FCP during a project unless FCP is the problem. Second, why didn’t you just re-install just Compressor? Third, you should have exported a self-contained movie prior to the reinstall.

Change your Reconnect Media settings to “Manually select files.” It’s possible some of your names are different on the media drives. Media doesn’t just disappear off your drives, it’s probable that some names are not exactly the same on your media drives and you’ll need to manually re-link them.

One issue that can arise is if you decided to capture audio and video as separate files. That causes a lot of headaches when reconnecting media and is why you really don’t want to do that.

  • [Dragos] “The DeckLink Card comes with a male 9 pin connecter (RS232)and the beta deck has a female adapter on the back that looks like a RS422.”

The 9pin from the Decklink IS an RS-422 connector. According to the specs I just read on a website, you have RS-232 on your UVW-1200. Look at http://www.markertek.com or call ProMax about getting an adapter to go from the Decklink to the deck. http://www.promax.com.
