FCP 8 should have the ability to edit H.264 natively because quite honestly, converting it all to ProRes gets old in a hurry. Especially when you have hours and hours of it.
Not that we’ll hear anything about FCP 8 at NAB in April. We’ll have to wait until Apple is ready to tell us in their own sweet time and then of course none of will have the opportunity to see it hands on unless you want to go to their wiz bang “national” tour. Try planning your purchases for the next two years when all you get is silence from your primary NLE provider.
I’m afraid FCP 8 will most likely be underwhelming. Could be wrong, but with 10 or so people testing it out (maybe a few more) I’m not really sure who Apple is listening to. Those 10 (or so) people or the 1 million+ registered users. So far it seems they only listen to those 10 (or so) people.

The boss should have had you sign a non-compete clause prior to the edit essentially saying that if the third party approached you directly about working with them, you would have to go through the boss first.
I use freelancers all the time in our shop and one of the things we don’t have in place is a non-compete for freelancers. We DO however have an understanding that if I bring you in to work on a project with one of my clients, they’re still my client. If you decide to work directly with that client in the future, that will harm our relationship.
Fortunately I have a very good roster of freelancers who respect that I don’t steal their clients and they don’t steal mine. We have had a few instances where the client went directly to the freelancer for follow up work or potentially another project. In those cases, the freelancer contacted me first and we either worked it out or I simply released the project to the freelancer directly. It also works in reverse when I help out a colleague or another company with a project. If their end client calls me directly for a project, I go back through the original colleague / company before proceeding.
Open communication is the key. If I had enough work to keep a freelancer busy all the time I’d hire them. In lieu of that, I pay them a fair wage to do the work and trust that they respect me and my company enough that they won’t try to steal clients.
In your case, when the PBS Exec approached you directly, it would have been appropriate for you to at least let this boss know that they approached you and want to work directly with you. This would have probably defused what turned into what sounds like a bad situation for you where you got caught in the middle.

This really is completely ridiculous. Having someone pitch you an idea does not transfer ownership of that idea to you. We only have to hope that all agencies stay away from this offer because if one DOES take it and they create a successful commercial campaign, then others will be emboldened to try the same approach.

In all seriousness, if there’s not a major update announced around NAB, I would imagine that it would be time to start looking around.”Personally I would love to see someone like The Foundry get a hold of FCP.
I don’t really expect an update to be announced at NAB unless Apple decides to join the SuperMeet and actually show something this year rather than the horrid presentation of last year when Steve Bayes got up there and essentially said nothing. Other than that, they’ll probably sit this one out again while Adobe, Avid and the others make their announcements. I’m really hoping for Avid to finally allow us to run on the Kona boards since they’re already using them anyway.
Apple will probably sit on their announcement until May or June like they usually do. Rumor sites have missed the mark FCP for so many years now they’re quite laughable in their predictions (Final Cut Extreme anyone?) Unlike iPhones and iPads, the pro software stuff is much better guarded.
They do have something up their sleeve that we’ll see before long but whether the rabbit they pull out is enough to keep up with the times remains to be seen.

Ok, don’t save anything long term to your “Favorites” Bin in the Effects Tab. The next time you trash your Preferences, “poof” the transition will be gone.
What you want to do is create a new bin in your Project. Or better yet, start a new project and call it “FCP Custom Transitions” and create a bin in there called “Alpha Transitions.”
Now drag your transition from the Favorites bin in the Effects tab to this new bin in your project.
Save the project where your coworkers can access it.
Now all they have to do is open the project and either drag your bin to their own project or simply keep that project open while they work. When they need the transition they simply drag it into the timeline.

When we upgrade from one version of studio to the next we always do a clean install. Remove all elements of the old version and install the new version fresh.
Most of the time we’ll even do a complete clean install of the OS as well so we start with a completely clean computer. Seems to create the absolute least issues.

We make 720p pro res files from AE all the time. No prob with FCP bringing it in correctly

Um, AJA has been the Avid OEM video board for years now. Where was your doom and gloom post when that first happened? So this is really not a big deal of an announcement.
You cannot use the AJA Kona board with Avid right now. That is only reserved for the AJA OEM board with the Avid DS (it’s essentially the AJA Kona board) so they are not abandoning their strategy of overpaying for their own branded hardware. Until that happens, they will continue to not gain back as much market share as they could if the fully opened up the software to 3rd party cards.
