Sharing custom transitions

FCP 7: I’ve figured out how to create custom alpha transitions, but I haven’t been able to figure out how to share them with my coworkers.. Certainly this is possible?

This is my process so far:

1. Apply Alpha transition between 2 clips.
2. Place the appropriate footage and alpha mattes in the clip wells.
3. Drag the new custom transition to my favorites bin and rename.
4. ??

At this point, I thought I would be able to find the transition on my hard drive somewhere, or be able to export it as a transition, but I’m not having any luck.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Ok, don’t save anything long term to your “Favorites” Bin in the Effects Tab. The next time you trash your Preferences, “poof” the transition will be gone.

What you want to do is create a new bin in your Project. Or better yet, start a new project and call it “FCP Custom Transitions” and create a bin in there called “Alpha Transitions.”

Now drag your transition from the Favorites bin in the Effects tab to this new bin in your project.

Save the project where your coworkers can access it.

Now all they have to do is open the project and either drag your bin to their own project or simply keep that project open while they work. When they need the transition they simply drag it into the timeline.

Sincere thanks for your time Walter, but I’m having some issues with your suggestion..

I made a test project, placed the transition in a bin in the project browser with the related transition footage and alpha mattes and saved it. Then I moved the project and footage to my laptop. Upon opening the project, I get the missing footage dialog. After reconnecting the footage, I try to use the transition but the footage is also missing from the transition. So then I have to drag the footage and alpha mattes back into the transition, essentially recreating each one.

Have you been able to share a custom transition without the recipient having to rebuild each transition? Please let me know if I’m doing something wrong..
