I graded a music video yesterday from R3Ds on a 2008 mac pro. At 1/8 Rez good I was getting solid 24fps playback with sound and to be honest the resolution was sufficient, and definitely worth realtime playback.

I only had to swap out a few shots into half rez good to check my keying.

One thing I’m wondering about though – when I tried to do a render out to Quicktime using Full Rez Premium setting, I started getting dropped frame, frame skipped error. I understand my computer is no longer a beast, but when rendering, why would DaVinci have to skip frames? Shouldn’t it just go slower?

By the numbers it sounds like 400 would be enough for 1080/2k DPXs as well. Am I right in that thinking, that a 4 drive internal raid should handle 2k realtime?

I’m looking at the problem I’m seeing is the hard drives make a solid wall off between the optical bay area and the expansion cards. If you have all 4 hard drive bays filled I don’t see how it would be possible.

The rumor was that a beta build of the next OSX update seeded to developers did contain beta drivers for the 480 card. Not sure how much of that is valid.

The other problem is that the GTX480 is *very* absurdly power hungry. I am not sure if any of the current mac power supplies allot enough power for a card like that.

I’ve run HDMI from DeckLink on DaVinci and it works just fine!

Ola, which 2009 do you have? the 8-core 2.93GHz?

It’s interesting that it also requires RAID to work well. RED footage is pretty compressed so it’s not a lot of data per second..

Ah so I wasn’t crazy not being able to get those to work.

I’d like to second my support for adding quick memory access to Wave/Keyboard combo!

Just search for “GTX285 mac” on ebay – you’ll be given a plethora of choices. I came up with a full page of results, all of them looking like they’re flashed.

If it was done well, it should work. The hardware is identical. The firmware requires a larger ROM chip which the flasher should have soldered on.

If those things were done, a flashed card becomes no different than the mac card. The mac wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.
