Hdmi out on decklink from Resolve mac…?
Posted by Christopher Adams on September 28, 2010 at 4:14 pmFor those running with the Decklink and resolve: Does the Decklink allow HDMI monitoring out? I am coming from color/matrox world. And have been using a calibrated pro plasma setup. Do I need to spring for the HD-SDI board for the plasma at this point? Yes I know that its the proper way to go but for now will the HDMI out work similar to this?

September 28, 2010 at 4:45 pmIt should work. I haven’t tested it though. The Decklink settings in the System Preferences says it’s outputting to SDI and HDMI.
The reason I haven’t tested HDMI is simply that there’s no available slots left in the Mac Pro to hook up the HDMI slot. I could probably use the on-board HDMI ports, but then I’d have to leave the side door open.

September 28, 2010 at 4:51 pmYou have 2 optical bays. Just slip a bit longer hdmi out from there and leave side closed.

September 29, 2010 at 1:44 amHi Christopher,
Yes, the HDMI in/out with DeckLink HD Extreme is supported with Resolve but unfortunately there are not enough slots in a Mac Pro to fit the HDMI bracket. There are a total of 4 slots in the Mac Pro. Two of these are filled with graphics cards, one with a DeckLink card and usually one with a HBA card connected to your disk storage. That leaves no space for the HDMI bracket and so you might need to use an SDI to HDMI converter to connect to your plasma display.
Some people posting in this forum have suggested leaving the side door off the Mac Pro or drilling holes in the Mac Pro to connect HDMI cables directly to the DeckLink card without having to use the HDMI bracket. I can’t recommend these ideas as they might cause electromagnetic interference or airflow problems aside from looking rather ugly! There would also be a risk of tugging the HDMI cables and damaging the DeckLink card.
Margus posted to this thread an interesting idea of routing the HDMI cables from the rear of the DeckLink card out through the spare optical bay in the Mac Pro. However I can’t see any way of doing that without drilling holes inside the Mac Pro and it is not an elegant solution. There would be a risk of tugging the HDMI cables and damaging the DeckLink card.
If you can use an internal software disk array in your Mac Pro, and don’t need a HBA card, then you will have space for the HDMI bracket for monitoring with your plasma display. The HDMI bracket will ensure that any stress on an HDMI cable would only lead to the HDMI cable pulling out of the bracket and no damage would occur to the DeckLink card.

September 29, 2010 at 5:10 amwho cares what it looks like as long at it works.
drilling a hole in a MacPro seems the way to go as Apple have left the Pro market behind for iToys.
Besides the MacPro is out of sight away from the monitors and will be outdated and worthless soon enough just like all computer hardware you buy… look at SGI, you can’t even sell one to use as a door stop these days 🙂Rory Hinds

September 29, 2010 at 7:30 amI have until 1400h today before I have to attend a meeting. Slow times for color grading it seems… I’ll check out if your idea is possible, Margus.
Btw – where are you from? Never met anyone else online having the same surname. 🙂

I had the same idea you had about running the hdmi cable out the front optical bay. I tweeted about it the other day. I would have done it already but I haven’t replaced my BMD card yet(nor do I have Resolve yet). I’m already running a Raptor and a Blu-Ray in those bays…I see 0 issue with the hdmi pulling out. If need be I’d just zip tie the cable to a couple of the holes in the front of the MacPro. EZ fix…and better than cutting holes in case you want to resale it for a few bucks later =)

September 29, 2010 at 2:17 pmI didn’t have any equipment or screwdrivers with me, so I couldn’t really see a way to pull a calbe through there. But I’d be surprised if it’s not possible.
