That is the reason I ultimately didn’t build a custom system. It seems dangerous to have to rely on third party drivers and hacks when you have deadlines to meet and nervous clients.

Also as far as cost goes, a Mac will always have a higher resale value than a custom-built computer. So I have a greater chance to recover money in the next upgrade.

  • I just set up my new 12 core yesterday, coming from the old 2008 Mac Pro I was using. What a breath of fresh air! Half-res good r3d debayers realtime – so no need for the Rocket yet.

Wow, I think that about does the trick. I owe you many a beer if you’re ever in NYC, Oyvind.

    Thanks Oyvind,

I guess I was shorthanding some stuff I’m doing. I have been reading Bruce’s amazing site for a while now. My biggest question was to understand exactly what DaVinci’s XYZ lut.

In essence, my other alternative is to use ImageMagick, linearize sRGB color space, matrix transform, change white-point with another transform, and take it back to 2.6 gamma (that’s the spec as far as I could tell). But IM is painfully slow.

I don’t have access to software to build luts yet, unfortunately, so hacking away in the meantime!

Sounds awful. The only thing that comes to mind is, R3D files have both timecode and edgecode. Is there anything you can use (fcp, premiere, clipfinder..) to find and reconnect straight to the original R3Ds by edgecode, and then change working mode to timecode, homogenizing your timeline?

That does seem to make sense – the difference could be the white point. Unfortunately I just can’t seem to get which reference white it’s converted to… hmm.

  • Maybe it’s just me but I would have some real trouble using Resolve without a panel because it lacks graphical representation of hue/sat wheels like Color. It’s much slower to have to adjust individual RGB sliders on the primaries.

Other than that though, everything else is easy with tablet/mouse.

Wondering… is there a Resolve SDK of any kind available publically?

These variables work for clip names when rendering, they might work for folder names too:

    %L = filename
    %R = resolution
    %T = EDL REEL
    %V = Version Name

Ah, very devious ola. And here I am trying to bribe my clients with old fashioned whisky!

But in all seriousness i have been extremely impressed with the iPads screen. It seems very accurate to rec 709 to the point at if I were to send a reel or a color proof to a client I would feel more comfortable with them using an iPad versus any other random screen.

Maybe streaming to iPad for remote grading….
