April 17, 2011 at 6:26 pm in reply to: Conform FCP Red Project to Original R3D’s from ProRes TranscodesWith R3Ds it should be fairly easy as long as your ProRes or whatever has the correct name. Essentially you will see:
If your R3D has embedded reels, use those (to avoid the extra _001 with pattern matching) so you should do this:
Note, after you change this setting all footage has to be re-imported into the media pool. (I remember actually having to start a new project once because I couldn’t get it to read right but that might have been some fluke)
Then, as long as your EDL events (with pull reel name from filename comment field enabled)
match the Reel ID (you can double check under clip details
Everything ought to work. I just ran this for a feature conform where everything was renamed to hell, but the ProRes still had the right RED reels in the reel metadata.
Funny, there’s no option in FCP to “use full reel in comment” as opposed to filename. That would have been helpful. I had to use some RegEx TextWrangler tricks to force it to work.

Or even, if there’s an X, an option to drag and drop a clip from the pool and then slip it in place. And to see the in point timecode on the new clip which would make it easy if your reference quicktime has source burn-in (which it should!)

I’m really curious how this whole notion of a trackless collapsible nested timeline is going to work with roundtripping to color, fx, and sound design software.
I don’t want to have to think that it’s going to be our job to undo the new mess editors will unleash!

When the industrial revolution happened various tradesmen and women revolted and tried to burn down new machines that threatened their livelihoods. But in the end, more people were employed by their industries with each individual earning more and having a higher standard of living.
It’s not a perfect analogy but I guess what I’m trying to say is, sure there’s a ton more people there who can afford to do this stuff (hey I’m one of them), but at the same time there are a lot more projects to work on and will be increasing. I don’t know what the scene will look like 10 years from now but I don’t think this is the death of high end (and high paying) grading.

I had some problems (although with the G25 plasma) when I first got the HDLink and problems stemmed down to the Display Port to HDMI adapters. They actually were very helpful and even provided beta firmware that resolved the issue. Since the latest updates everything has been going well, although sometimes I have to switch between video output modes to get the picture to show up.
Not sure if your issue’s completely different but hope that helps.

Can you media-manage your clips from the NLE to a separate folder? That way when you import that folder you’re getting just the clips you need?
I think what Illya was saying is to use Textwrangler to fix your EDL, then when you import based on EDL DaVinci won’t import the wrong stuff.
PS – my personal feature request would be to have Resolve copy files within its media pool. Eg: I add R3Ds to media pool based on EDL, then I have resolve copy those to local raid.
I know some 3rd party tools do this, but it would be an elegant solution in some ways.

April 12, 2011 at 2:41 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro “effects” supported in Resolve 8?This right here. Avoiding FCP for finishing. Not only is it slow, but I’m always worried it will do something to my footage. It would be so much better if I could make all my outputs straight from Resolve (even if I have to add a sound track in Quicktime).

Oh, I’d also be curious if they updated the speed-change algorithms. Currently I believe all we have is frame removal/frame duplication. Will we see anything of more finishing quality?
That’s the last kind of element that seems to require roundtripping through After Effects.
