They Foundry guy mentioned to use a Script to Export Camera from AE to 3D application. Here is a script which is very useful:
Keep in note that this will Export the Transform properties correctly but you will have to change the Camera Settings like Focal Length etc in Maya to match both composition.

Disable the Collapse Transformation for your Precomps that are in your main comp.
Enable Continuously Rasterize for AI files.
Just make your precomps 3D and them animate the camera.
I did the same thing as you have written and found that if I enable the
Collapse Transformation of my Precomp, it jitters.may be this will work.

The same is with me. It renders the file as Stereo when db level is at zero but if we alter it it previews only one channel.
There is no sound in the second channel.
But if you render the file, it will render as Stereo only.
May be this a bug in CS6.

It is the same with CS6 too.
Try to make the mask again. May be there is some other problem with it.
Also, You can open Illustrator file in PS and then Cut the icons you want as PNG and then import that file in AE. It will also work faster due to small size.

Another way is to use a White Solid as a Matte and then use it as Alpha Matte.
Using this method will give you complete and separate control over both the layers.

The Mask Shape is automatically parented to the properties of the layer on which it is applied.
So if you have a Rectangle, first Precomp it and then apply mask to it. This way you can manipulate the shape later on without altering the mask shape.
Make sure you choose move all attributes in the new composition.

Just Precomp your Character with the Spot Light.
Now if you make your Precomp 3D, it will accept the ambient light.
So to get rid out of that , Press “A” twice after selecting your precomp and them Turn Off your Accept lights.
