Just an add on to your method.
Using a white solid instead of photos is a good way to create Alpha/Luma matte layer. Press AA(press A twice)to reveal Material options of the matte layer and Turn Off Accept Light and Accept Shadows so that it will not get affected by the Environment. This will ensure that the matte will not get affected if in case you miss any light turned on.Vishesh Arora

If the Reveal Clip is Black and White as Dave has said then use it as Track matte to Change the color from White to Red.
Here is an example :

I saw the tutorial and found a way to create shadows of adjustment layer with a small trick using two masks at a time.
Here is the file:

Apply Drop Shadow Layer Style.
1. Select your Adjustment Layer in the Timeline,
2. Right Click on it.
