I did the same thing and their was no problem.
You can use Set Matte effect (Effects> Channel > Set Matte) instead.
Use an Eclipse Shape layer instead of a solid with oval mask as your matte layer.

1. Parent the camera to a Null object.
2. Apply Separate XYZ Position(Effects>Transform>Separate XYZ Position) to Null object and then animate the Null as required.Vishesh Arora

I totally agree with Angelo. Using Rotobrush Tool is the best way to handle such cases but as Angelo has said there is not much contrast, it will be difficult to judge the correct movement of character.
Since the shot is too dark, a little bit of rough masking will help.
Example:
This just a rough mask. Depending on the complexity of scene, you can animate the Mask Path.

Go to Project Panel, Right Click on footage>Interpret>Main
and change the frame rate to whatever you want. In this case 25.
