Or, should ask each place their exact settings, take my lossless render, and compress it individually for each of them?
I would always suggest to ask the clients right format to deliver. If in case its difficult to get the right info about codecs then Animation at 100% is a good choice.

The sound is played when read with Windows Media Player (and in Sony Vegas 11), but not with Media Player ClassicI assume that you have K-Lite Coded Pack installed(Since Media Player Classic comes with it). K-Lite Codec Pack creates problem for AE to playback several format. Uninstall it.
Do you have Audio Enabled in the Timeline and Time Controls Panel? Is your VU Meter(Green Bars for Left and Right Channel) acitve in Audio panel during RAM preview?

You can’t manipulate the Path using Expressions directly.
To modify the gradient, Click on Edit Gradient option.

.mov is just a file container. Open the file in QuickTime, Go to Windows> Show Movie Inspector and the video codec and then
Followup question for Dave’s Stock Answer #1 (If the footage you imported into AE is any kind of the following — footage in an HDV acquisition codec, MPEG1, MPEG2, AVCHD, mp4, mts, m2t, H.261 or H.264 — you need to convert it to a different codec.)
Also Do you have any Codec Pack installed like K-Lite?

Each icon should be colored individually.Have you created the icon in AE using Shape layers or is it a file that you have imported?
1. Is this at all possible?
Yes, It is possible to do so.
Is Scripting the way to go?If you have used shape layers then it would be possible to create this using repeater.
If it is a file that you have imported then you can use expressions to animate the position, opacity and cycle the colors. You can also use Red Giant’s Echospace Plugin.
3. How do I keep the computer responsive with so many elements on the screen? It depends on the size of document, system specs and effects that you will use.

You can animate the Characters individually using Animator.
Here are some links to learn how to animate text in After effects:

Try increasing the Shutter Angle to 180 or 360. I have uploaded a screenshot with default settings in my earlier post.
