If there is a problem related to Black area, Try to key it out.For this you can use
Luma key – Key out Darker , play with Threshold or Tolerance.Red Giant’s Knoll Unmult

With just one click it will remove the black bg. Also try to enable Collapse Trasformation as blending modes may work differently in Precoms(if any).

Paint, Roto brush, Tracking and several other features are activated only when you open the footage or image in new viewer by double clicking on them.

I would recommend to use ” Light(s) ” as Emitter Type. Make a light with name ” Emitter ” and the particle emitter will attach to it automatically.
Now you will have better controls on Z – Axis. Just parent the light to the Prooton or Pick-Whip its position to that of Proton.
You can then use Proton as layer Obscure layers as what Mr. Cuevas has explained.

In my previous file, Just remove all the effects applied on Earth map. then Increase the size as required and use a mask tool for the desired shape.
Change the Gradient for the New Lower 3rd. Its easy. At least give it a try.

Yes TOM(form now onward – No formality :D), I have practiced a lot using their Green screen and Tacking plates. The best thing is that it’s for FREE and that too in HD.
Thier Master DVD’s are of great help to understand how things work.
