On my Kona Lhi I tried to play some 720p proxy files using the Kona easy setup for Pro Res proxy and got no output. When I set the video playback setting to 720p 8 bit, everything was fine. I tried this with the same P2 files transcoded to ProRes LT and had the same problem with the AJA easy setup. Don’t know if its my system or its a real bug, but if you have this problem, this is my fix. 1080i presets work just fine, so do all the fcp 6 projects I’ve tried 720 and 1080i.

I transcoded some P2 material 720p 59.94 into prores proxy and then used a AJA easy set up and the material wouldn’t output to my Kona card. I finally found if I changed the Video playback to 720p 8bit then all was good. All the AJA 720p pro res setups are set to 10bit and they only work with video set to 8 bit. The 1080i presets worked fine.

That’s awesome. I hadn’t really looked at sharing on Leopard and it seems to have been upgraded over Tiger. I didn’t realize you could set permissions for drives and users that’s a real difference than sharing on Tiger. Good stuff to know. Thanks

That’s good to know. What would you consider the limit to a simple system? We will have three full time computers working off the server and a couple of laptops occasionally reviewing footage.

Thanks Kent, but using the NDD drivers didn’t change a thing.
I’m probably going to try running out of the lhi and into one of our other machines that can capture at ProRes 1080i and see what that looks like. I’ll send examples of what i get to Aja. Right now I’m monitoring either through HDMI or component.
BTW I never install drivers from the CD and I never implied I thought it was an OS problem, but considering the problems I had upgrading the XSAN software I was making doubly sure.

While I totally agree with the above, that wasn’t the intent of my original post. I have had to pass on upgrading to Leopard for a couple of reasons. One being some software I need doesn’t play well with Leopard. The other more important is that I work with a company that has their server set up on Tiger and they don’t want anything to possibly disrupt this.

I understand this and I sadly pass on new plugins and software that are Leopard only, its just the way it is. What my gripe is is that all information that I could get says the Lhi is Tiger compatible, based on that I purchased the product and didn’t find out I was hosed until the driver wouldn’t install. Client expects to walk in Monday and uprez some footage. Anytime I’ve bought a new AJA card I’ve given myself a weekend to get it up and running, this has always been more than enough time, their stuff is so bullet proof.

Part of my job is upgrading and installing the software on all our computers, so I’m not unfamiliar with that, time consuming but part of life.

So I hope you enjoyed your ranting and hopefully venting will add years to your life.

You can use the RCA audio outputs to XLRs but don’t just use a RCA to XLR cable. That way you’re adding over 12db of noise to your signal. It always amazed me that video editors who spend days comparing codecs to get the most pristine picture happily trash their audio and don’t hear the difference.
You need to match the levels properly. A +4 input is optimized for that, meaning the lowest noise level will result when you have an input signal that is +4. You need to raise the -10 to +4 in a way that maintains the original signal to noise ratio. We use small boxes designed for that on all our -10 gear. You could get something like that from someone like Markertek. If you have something like a Mackie Mixer with an RCA in and an XLR out (I’ve used a 1402) you will get a much cleaner signal to the deck. Another issue is an RCA cable, especially a long one is suseptible to picking up hum and an edit suite is full of hum producers. So keep your RCA cable as short as possible and away from video and computer cables.
