Starting to spec out a gigabit SAN system and after reading the two tutorials about the systems Bob puts together I have a question.
In his original article Bob advocates the use of the MetaLan software to manage the system’s files. In the article on Walter’s system they just seem to be using just Apple’s file sharing. Which is a better way to go? Are there advantage’s or disadvantages to one approach or the other?
    Thanks for any info.

Tiger Technology is a great company, and MetaSAN is a great product. But we have found that for small simple systems that are MAC only, simple Apple File Sharing works just fine (and it comes for free with all of your computers). All you need is a dedicated MAC Pro computer, the Small Tree ethernet equipment, and a big disk drive array (actually, if you are doing DV25 files, you don’t even need that).

That’s good to know. What would you consider the limit to a simple system? We will have three full time computers working off the server and a couple of laptops occasionally reviewing footage.

you can have 10 systems running on AFP at full ProRes422HQ with absolutely no problem. Laptops and iMAC’s work great – they edit HD just as well as a MAC Pro in this configuration.

That’s awesome. I hadn’t really looked at sharing on Leopard and it seems to have been upgraded over Tiger. I didn’t realize you could set permissions for drives and users that’s a real difference than sharing on Tiger. Good stuff to know. Thanks
