On the softness issue, there are a couple of reasons I can think of. One would be that it was shot interlaced and you exported progressive, that would basically throw out half the resolution. The other is that it might have been shot in HD (you exported SD). For Youtube, I always try to export at the best quality possible (High bit rate H.264 at > 20 Mb/s.
On the “flatness” of the footage, you shot flat, so you are very limited in post.
My advice would be to actually light less next time. Let the shadows come in, maybe just light from one side at 45 deg and use a white board on the other side.
The wall / black background are also very flat. On the wall, shoot further away and zoom in/open iris to throw the background out of focus.
Light the background where the foreground / talent’s face is dark to bring dimension/separation.

No, but here’s the way I look at it. If you are a pilot, you have a check list to go through before you take off, and I know a lot of editors that make quite a bit more than pilots do 🙂
I do the same with editing, and the list is quite long these days…
if you reveal the entire timeline and double click on the work area it will resize to match the entire timeline.

Thinking about it now, if you are seeing this message, you likely have no driver or a default driver installed.
If you check your display pref, you’ll probably a really low resolution set by default.

If you can snag a 3.1 2008 for under $1300, that would be a good deal. Once you upgrade the RAM (to say 12GB) and the video card (CUDA preferred), you’ll still have a powerhorse. We have a 3.1 in our one of suites and it’s still going great.

You are really trading a lot of speed for the MBP compatibility.
When it comes to an affordable single suite RAID system, there is no contest in my mind. The Caldigit Element.
We still get an average of 320 MB/s Read/write with a nearly full array in RAID 5. It’s been very, very solid, and their support is fantastic.
It might be worth checking with them is there is a Mini sas converter out there that would work with the Macbook pro.
Just make sure you have an empty slot in the MacPro for the card.

Hi Al,
You’re going to need more CPUs and more RAM. Laptop are also inefficient when it comes to encoding since they often cap processing power to reduce heat.
CS5 needs about 12 Gigs of RAM on newer CPUs. I would also recommend at the minimum an i7 quad core CPU.
You could also look at a used dual Xeon Mac Pro, use boot camp if you are a Windows guy.
We still have a 3.1 (8) core Mac Pro that easily burns our newest i7 CPUs at encoding time, and they are very reliable. You can get one of these on eBay for about $1200.

I’ve seen this happen with sequences made using an i/o card preset that is no longer available.
Eg. AJA / Blackmagic card or software that are no longer there.

Try going online first and find images similar to these that YOU like.
My idea of amazing may not be your idea of amazing. Some people like the overexposed brushed look of magazine covers, others like to see features and details.
I would first add a bit of saturation, and play with the levels filter, crush the blacks a bit and bring up the highlights.
Then you can start playing with the 3 way color corrector.
