Haa, I know that’s not the first time you bring up the “Pro” argument, but what would the world be without a good argument 😉

Again, Pro doesn’t mean anything those days does it? You wouldn’t expect the same performance from a $10000.00 camera than you would of a $100000.00 camera, yet they are both considered Pro equipment. The list goes on… So what’ s left to define performance? Yep you guessed it: the PRICE. (And reviews of course… ) And for $600.00 + hardware, I don’t expect to be able to cut Lord of the Rings anytime soon (Although one could ague you probably could, at least the DVD version 😉

    Cheers,

You can’t create an NTSC DVD from a PAL project within Premiere. For that, you’ll need a third party application such as Procoder. Your output to PAL within a PAL project probably won’t work on an standard NTSC DVD player either.

“No disrepect intended here but the moniker “PRO” implies that the software will be able to handle “PRO” project types, like docs that often involve thousands of media assets.”

There must be a PP bashing contest going on 😉

For comparison sakes, go drop just 20000 clip in Final Cut “Pro” and tell me what happens… Or don’t, I can tell what will happen, it’ ll crawl just as well. We all know that Pro doesn’t mean anything, it’s marketing. But if you are working on those kind of project you are probably getting paid more than I am, and can probably afford something in the Discreet arena.

    Marisu,

I’m just curious, and please don’t take offense to my comment. I have only seen your name in a couple of threads, and in both cases you are basically stating that Premiere can’t handle your projects, the latest that it can’t handle editing, yet your profile states that you are using 3 Discreet 5 editing system. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but you are comparing the performance of a $600.00 software NE to that of a hardware based product selling between $8000.00 and $10000.00 (times 3)?

Most of us are independent filmmakers, or videographers, and don’t really see a need in the performance you are requiring.

    My two bits.

  • Of course, what works for me, may not work for you. I mostly work on moderate size projects, and may not be pushing PP to its limit, but again, I also trim down my project regularly, so that my load times are kept to a minimum. One thing I learned to avoid is closing or even editing with too many rendered files. Of course, I am not running the newest and best hardware out there either, so millage always varies.

The best thing to do at this point is to send these requests to Adobe for consideration.

    Cheers,

I think that may be coming from your hardrive itself.. Do you have sufficient space on the harddrive to save the temp files or ISO ? Is the external drive FAT 32 or NTSF ?

What field are you using to create the caption ?

I was using the filename, since that was all I needed; I used a third party software to remove the underscores and extension prior.

  • I’ll agree with you that Premiere doesn’t always handle things in the most efficient manner, but the convenience of that amount of data is certainly not anything Adobe ever intended, and I again, I would challenge you to try any of the other top 3 software based NLE with 30000 files. They will all slow down to a crawl.

If there is one thing I can commend the Adobe team on for PP2, it’s its stability. I have used PP2 for the last 6 month an average of 5 hours a day (not much of a life in the winter time), and I can’t recall the last time I saw a crash.

  • I was just about to say, if each clip was just 5 seconds, that would be about 2000 hours of footage ??

It sure seems like something isn’t right here…

I usually Demux VOBs to Mpg2 using TMPGEnc and then import them into Premiere.

If Premiere accepts them and the sync is right, I think that’s as good of a quality you are going to get. What export settings are you using ? You are re-compressing an Mpeg2 to Mpeg2 so your quality is going to suffer quite a bit no matter what. A previous conversion to AVI probably won’t help here.
