Please help with poor NTSC DVD’s
Can anyone please tell me where I’m going wrong? I have a finished film in a PAL AVI file – from which I can create excellent quality PAL DVD’s with Adobe Premiere Pro 2. I’ve tried making NTSC DVD’s of the film but the picture quality is poor because of very slight but fast shaking. It isn’t the DVD player or TV as other NTSC DVD’s play very well on them as they are NTSC units . I’ve tried outputting to DVD from both PAL and NTSC projects with no difference. I’ve even bought in the latest Roxio DVD creation software and it makes no difference – still incredibly slight but fast shaking which really plays havok on the eyes. Has anyone actually experienced anything like this? Regards, C.J.

You can’t create an NTSC DVD from a PAL project within Premiere. For that, you’ll need a third party application such as Procoder. Your output to PAL within a PAL project probably won’t work on an standard NTSC DVD player either.

So your taking a PAL project and burning a NTSC DVD? That’s your problem right there.
PAL is what 25fps? NTSC is 30(29.97) so you are in fact adding frames that aren’t there.
Also, you might be having an issue with the Aspect ratios and frame size being different.
You need to convert the AVI into a NTSC format first some how then burn it to disk.

Thanks Guys. Premiere Pro has the option to output to DVD in either PAL or NTSC irrespective of whether your in a PAL or NTSC project – so aspect ratios and adding frames is done within Premiere and you can tweak the options if you wish. But, as mentioned previously, I’ve tried outputting from both PAL and NTSC projects with the same results. I’ve also tried creating NTSC AVI and MPG2 files and burning them to an NTSC DVD with Premiere and Easy DVD Creator with pretty much the same results. It’s really perplexing, so I’ll check into ProCoder as you suggest and see if that helps. I appreciate the suggestions. Regards, C.J.

Yes, you are correct, it does have an option to export to either format, but as far as I know, Premiere will not produce an adequate conversion. The only thing you can do without a prior conversion to NTSC is export to PAL, and play the footage on a PAL system.
Sadly, Procoder isn’t cheap, but that’s the only software that has given me satisfactory results, other than a hardware based system. I believe they do have a trial version, but I’m not sure about limitations involved.

ProCoder worked fine – many thanks for the suggestion. The titles are less than sharp but the picture is pretty good. I appreciate the help! Regards, C.J.
