What version of FCP are you using? I am on 6.0.5 and I am only able to have 5 window layouts with shortcuts of Control/Shift 6, 7, 8, 9 & 0. Any additional window layouts saved after those numbers are filled up are pushed down the line and not accessible thru those shortcuts. Looks like Chaz & Hezys pushed your layouts off the shortcut list.

    hope that helps,

Instead of reconnecting the media in the bins what happens when you right click on the sequence you are working on in the Browser and RECONNECT MEDIA that way. I think the sequence is still looking for the original media destination.

If you can reconnect then open that sequence to be sure it is the sequence you are reconnecting the media for especially if someone else worked on the project before you. You are correct in thinking that not using media manager sometimes makes relinking footage tricky.

    Good luck,

  • Although I did not know him personally we were all shocked to hear the news. As we all stood there in silence watching the photo montage celebrating his life and career one couldn’t help but notice how truly missed he will be. My condolences to his family and friends.

Does your sequence match your footage. This may help stop having to render every time even without filters. Also 2 gigs of ram seems a bit low. Lately ram has dropped in price to seem almost free compared to a year ago, and not sure if HD ProRes will comfortably run on a non-Intel mac.

you can also try highlighting the nest (click on it) and press Return. I don’t think it is a special keyboard setting, It just worked like that on my keyboard since FCP 6. Should also work to open a regular un-nested clip.

    good luck,

April 15, 2009 at 7:04 pm in reply to: SONY HDV deck-HVR M 15U deck

Could be a number of things as others will likely say also. What comes quick to mind is,

Is your easy setup correct? DV NTSC
I use an HVR 25U that plays HDV. I believe the 15U does not. Don’t know what you are trying to ingest.
Is there a remote switch on the face of the deck?
Is the problem that you can digitize from the camera, but not the deck?

I would say Apple Color. You can treat each action (color change) you want in its own room in color which is especially useful if there is action in your shot. I generally only use Color Correction in FCP for basic correction even tho you can do more with it, but for that I use Apple Color.

I’m sure there is a tutorial for a similar effect you are looking for here on the Cow. There also are a few on the Apple website

    good luck,

Color is best for this effect, but if you want to do it in FCP

Add the 3 way color corrector to your clip.
open the 3 way color corrector so you can see the 3 color wheels.
Click on the tiny triangle in the bottom left of the 3 Way.
Click on the eyedropper and click on the color you want to keep.
Set the saturation bar above the tiny triangle to zero to get rid of the color you want to keep. You can inverse later.
Adjust the spreader bars to cover all of the color.
use edge thinning and softening, click on the key box to see the matte you are creating to make sure all is covered.
click on the inverse box (third one on the bottom) to inverse what you did.
Use garbage matte to clean up unwanted edges.

If you don’t know how to use Apple Color, once you do it will probably take less time to do this effect. If you have an entire film I would recommend learning Color. It will also be much cleaner.

    good luck,

April 14, 2009 at 4:17 pm in reply to: EFX Designation on a timeline clip

If you set your playhead sync in the Canvas to OPEN
and select the FILTERS tab in the Viewer
with your playhead stopped over a clip in the Sequence you can see what filters are on that clip by looking at the Viewer

    Hope that helps.
