  • Sad news at NAB: Michael Vitti’s left us I’m afraid.

Posted by Jerry Hofmann on April 24, 2009 at 4:58 pm

Michael Vitti, a long time fixture in the FCP community and a great guy died instantly in Caesar’s Palace of a massive heart attack. He will be missed by many.

He was a very kind soul and always ready to help others. Sad indeed.

I spent most of the afternoon that Sunday with him, and there was absolutely no sign of stress or another indication he was in serious trouble, in fact, it was the opposite. I think it’s a wake up call for us all to monitor our heart health, known as the silent killer. Michael was only in his 40’s.

Are you kidding me? Jeez, a nicer guy it couldn’t have happened to… This sucks…

In my shocked haste, I neglected to offer condolences to anyone who ever had the pleasure of knowing him. Such a nice guy. This must have crushed all the guys at the show. Ralph and Charles have company up there now.

Although I did not know him personally we were all shocked to hear the news. As we all stood there in silence watching the photo montage celebrating his life and career one couldn’t help but notice how truly missed he will be. My condolences to his family and friends.

My condolences as well. We didn’t know each other that well but he would always come talk to me at the MMB and Supermeet. I don’t think he had a clique-ish bone in his body.

I chatted with Jerry and Michael for a period on Sunday… It was a shock to hear of Michael passing.

The first NAB booth I’ve ever worked with a flower arrangement and an ‘in memory of’ sign at the front desk.

In honor of Michael, I’ll just add that the few times that I’d been around him, he was just the nicest guy and made me feel very comfortable. My condolences go out to his loved ones.

[Jerry Hofmann] “He will be missed by many. “

Yes he will, and it did affect all of us at the show, it was crushing news.

MIK had been working for Aja at the show and they erected a memorial to his memory at the front desk of the booth.

He will be missed, not only in NYC but to all who knew him.

“Tellyyyyyyyy!” was the way Mik Vitti used to greet me. Man, I’m going to miss that!

Every year at NAB, I looked forward to seeing him. He was always such a blast to hang out with. He was funny as hell and always a positive spirit. It just tears me up that I’ll never have the opportunity to see my friend again.

A lot of people don’t know that Mik was the founder of the NYC Final Cut Pro Users Group and the MoPictive collective. He really cared about filmmakers and the community he was a part of. He was a force early on and his efforts will never go unnoticed. There is a reason that Mik was known and loved by many. Some, have never even met him but speak of him in reverence. That pretty much says it all. We are all going to miss Mik so damn much.

I remember in 2004 I was doing a tour for my book. I did a little presentation at the NYCFCPUG. Mik let me stay with him is his loft in Brooklyn for 5 days so I could not only speak at his group, but could enjoy and see NYC through his eyes. During that time, I got to know Mik very well and saw all of his favorite places. I’ll never forget his kindness on that trip.

Mik, buddy, I am going to miss you and just know that we will never forget you!

Nothing could have made for a more bittersweet NAB for all of us at AJA… Like others have said, he looked in high spirits on Sunday – he was excited about the show and the new products… and then he was gone. We will all miss him very, very much…

While we put out an “In Memoriam” notice and flowers in our booth at NAB, we are also talking with others about contributing to a memorial scholarship in Michael’s name… he was not only a great person, but a great educator as well and so this seems particularly appropriate. We are awaiting details from his family regarding this, but I would encourage all of you who are interested to particpate in supporting this should it happen.

Hard to even talk about this now without some tears… but Michael always made us laugh, and he left us happy – that youthful exuberance of his was always contagious… and though he left us far, far too soon, he will not be forgotten.

Our sympathies to everyone in the community and most of all to his family.
