I use mattes made in photoshop on various projects to add an additional element (GFX) to a certain area of the screen for Text.
Place the matte on V-2 / A copy of the clip on V-3 / Add the Composite Mode – Travel Matte Luma to the clip on V-3 / Add your effects to either the clip on V-1 OR the clip on V-3 for the look you want.Lately I have found that sending clips to Apple Color gives me a more believable image if I want something blurred in the background. It takes a bit of prep work to start, and is well worth it if you have the time, but lately the process has been getting faster and faster as I increase the number of clips I send to Color.
good luck,

I agree with Chris. I mostly use Motion for this, but if you want to understand why you get the ping pong effect Shane Ross has a good video tutorial on it, the secret is adjusting the nodes in the Canvas for your X & Y axis, the Scale is adjusted in the Motion Tab (the tutorial is on Photo Stills, but its hopefully the answer needed for with your moving video)

I have not been able to preview fonts live before selecting them using the FCP Text Tool. If you are using Boris Title 3D (provided with Final Cut Studio) you can highlight the text in the text window and just to the right of the Font selector there is an ↑ up arrow and a ↓ down arrow that lets you preview the font as you scroll live.
hope that helps

There are a few different ways to make a clip stop with FCP
One way is to use Time Remap in the Motion tab of the Viewer.
Double click on the clip you want to freeze in the Timeline to open it up in the Viewer.
In the Viewer go to the Motion Tab.
Open up the Time Remap at the bottom of the list you will see a diagonal green line.
Play the clip and stop where you want the still frame to occur.
Press P (Pen Tool) on the keyboard.
add a keyframe with your Pen Tool by clicking on the Green line inside Time Remap where the Playhead is.
Click and let go exactly on the keyframe you just created to reveal its number
Go to the end keyframe in the Viewer and drag down that keyframe to match the same number of the one you created. This causes the video to Stop going forward.
If you are having trouble getting the number to match, Click on the keyframe THEN hold Command
and drag. This causes your dragging to move slower.
Press A to go back to your Arrow tool. There are other ways described on page 345 of your User Manual. Some easier that this.
good luck,

I know its just another rumor to chase around…
Apple has been recruiting the help of professional video editors, asking them to test out major updates to the Final Cut line of software, say sources. The biggest of these is Final Cut Studio 3.0, incorporating Motion and Final Cut Pro among other production utilities. The suite is allegedly codenamed “Sideways,” and currently in the middle of beta testing, as well as compatibility checks with Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

Our shooters are sometimes off for weeks at a time shooting for multiple series on pre-labeled XDCAM Discs. Sometimes the shooter may need an extra disc and takes one from one of the other series pre-labeled stash. When the discs return we copy the discs media folder to the desktop and transfer back to the correct series XDCAM disc clip by clip which is very time consuming when the dic contains 50+ clips. IF there is a way to transfer multiple clips at a time I would like to know.

If its under VO I would rather send to SoundTrack. The final seems much cleaner that way. Process, Reduce Noise and adjust as needed. Save and check your FCP sequence. If you like what you did you can save your settings in SoundTrack as a SoundTrack Pro Script. Now when you encounter another section of the VO with the same wind noise, instead of adjusting it all over again you can just send to SoundTrack Pro Script and its done.
hope that helps
