Can I use masks from Photoshop in FCP?

FCP has this capability, albiet a bit primitive. There is the Garbage Mattes, 4 and 8 point. But then Paul Crisp made 32 and 64 point ones (Google them).

Or you can do this in Motion…draw a mask shape.

Consider if you will need to keyframe your mask, if so, then you want to stay in FCP or Motion.

I use mattes made in photoshop on various projects to add an additional element (GFX) to a certain area of the screen for Text.
Place the matte on V-2 / A copy of the clip on V-3 / Add the Composite Mode – Travel Matte Luma to the clip on V-3 / Add your effects to either the clip on V-1 OR the clip on V-3 for the look you want.

Lately I have found that sending clips to Apple Color gives me a more believable image if I want something blurred in the background. It takes a bit of prep work to start, and is well worth it if you have the time, but lately the process has been getting faster and faster as I increase the number of clips I send to Color.
