  • I believe that if you “view” on a monitor, white is 255-255-255, black is 0-0-0. If you view on a TV, your limits are 235-235-235 and 16-16-16.

From what I’ve heard, YouTube (and Vimeo) assume that your uploaded video falls in the 16-235 range and will automatically expand to 0-255 (since playback is on a computer monitor). Hence, if you feed YouTube 0-255 material, it anything 0-14 and 236-255 is getting overly crushed. Hence, the over-blacks and over-whites.

In Sony Levels, try using the preset: Computer RGB to Studio RGB. In Broadcast Colors, there’s a checkbox Studio RGB.

December 1, 2012 at 7:29 pm in reply to: How to crop a video and embed in another

    1. Put clip A in Track 1; Track Motion 1920 x 1080
    2. Put clip B in Track 2; Track Motion 1920 x 1080
    3. Add Pan/Crop to clip A. In P/C dialog, enable Mask. Add a Mask keyframe at time t0. Set the keyframe to be a rectangular 200×100.

This should put clip A over clip B with only the mask-ed portion of clip A being visible; i.e., clip B should show through from underneath.

  • Where are you viewing the rendered video?

Note that black (and white) in a video is not the same as black (and white) in a photo. In a jpg, white is 255-255-255; black is 0-0-0. Broadcast white is 235-235-235; black is 16-16-16.

Sounds like you need to take everything in 0-255 and scale it to be within 16-235. You probably need to use the video FX objects Levels and/or Broadcast Colors.

December 1, 2012 at 1:46 am in reply to: preview smooth for videos, slow for pictures!

Your HD footage might be 1920×1080, but your 5 MB jpg could be 2560×1920 (that’s what my Olympus point-n-shoot takes). If you have several images with Track Motion and/or Pan/Crop keyframes, especially with 3D motion, that is a huge processor strain.

Make copies of your images. As a rule, use images 2x (or less) of your target resolution. If you don’t plan on zooming in on an image, you can resize it down to 1440×1080 (source image aspect ratio 4:3) or 1620×1080 (source 3:2).

Do you have multiple vegas projects that are exhibiting this problem? Regardless, first I’d check the HD(s) for disk errors before doing anything else. Then for EACH problem .veg:

    1. Open
    2. Keep selecting “Ignore error, leave offline” until the file is opened. Make a note of each file (media) for which Vegas is complaining.
    3. Alt-6 (Edit Details)
    4. Select Events from the droplist
    5. Select the topmost, leftmost cell (should do Select All)
    6. Ctrl-C
    7. Open Excel, Paste
    8. Col J should be File Path.
    9. Mark the Files that you “Ignored” from Step 2.
    10. Close (do NOT save) the .veg project.

Repeat for each .veg and append your results in a single Excel worksheet for your reference.

I’d look at each “File Path” that caused Vegas to err.
Compare Media Info against (eg) what Vegas thought the file was (or should have been).

BTW … if you have a backup (.veg.bak), have you tried copy, rename, and open it?

I’ve been using: select .veg, R-Click, drag (onto Tracks), select Open Project from the context menu.

Have not installed Vegas 12 though. Would be annoying if they took this out.

Can you post a Vegas screenshot?

You probably should have no Track Motion in tracks 2 and 3.
Tracks 2 and 3 are both children of Track 1.
Track 1 should have parent motion.

Are your tracks similar to ones in this tutorial:

I think what you need is to insert a new track above 1 so:
    Track 1 – parent
Track 2 – child, green screen
    Track 3 – child, background

and add the parent motion to Track 1.
