here is how you get the two objects into one layer.

1. in illustrator go to windows/Layers.

once the layer panel is up. click on the small arrows next to the layers.. this expands the layers so you can see what elements are inside of it. just like Photoshop at the bottom of this panel are buttons. one is a button for new layer.

2. click new layer button

3. on the shape layer you created, click and drag the shape into the new layer you created. this is all done in the layers panel. repeat this for the type field.

4. now you should have both the type feild and the shape in one layer. make sure the shape layer is on top of the type field in terms of layer order.

5. select the shape layer and go to Object/Text Wrap. BAM.. you should have your type wrapping around the shape.

Auto trace is just a plug-in. It usually results in a rough crappy result that needs to be cleaned up. I only use auto trace if I can’t find a vector version of the logo. If you haven’t already, I would suggest looking on a wonderful website called, Best Brands of The World.

accounts are free and you need one to download. But all of the logos are Vector. I usually start there and if I can’t find it then i turn to auto trace.

normally I try not to use the simplify path. because it cut so many corners. usually use the Delete Anchor point tool… which is under the Pen tool.

so… are you building the file in Illustrator and then copying it out of illustrator and placing it into photoshop? you might want to give a break down of your work flow…

File/Save for Web & Devices allows you to export a web ready image in PNG in both 8 and 24. again like by Vincent Rosati said. selecting 24 is key to making the cleanest alpha channel. PNG-24 should stop any white fringing around the alpha channel. which happens often with object that have drop shadows, and outer glows.

I just want you to check a couple things.

1. is the Shape and the Text in the same layer?

2. is the Type feild a box or just a line. THIS IS KEY… it must be a box.

this is the step that hung me up. select the Type tool.. click and drag out a box. then click inside of it and add your type.

it looks like you got everything else right. BTW i did this in cs5. if it still doesn’t work.. then i would say it is a cs6 issue.

can you post and image so we can get a better idea of what you are doing.

it sounds like you need to make a compound path … a shape like the letter “O” or “A” where there is a hole in the middle. to do this you need to make your outer path… then make an inner path.

– you might want to look at some tutorials on using the pathfinder tool at this point

then use the path finder tool to make a compound path. once this is done you need to select that resulting compound path and the image and right click for a Clipping mask. this should result in a image with a mask with another mask in it as you asked… please let me know if this helps.

here is my work around. i took a shape.. with a gradient and grain applied to it… then i duplicated that shape and applied the color i wanted the shape to be. then i made sure the solid color was on top of the grain gradient shape layer in the layers palette . and finally i set the transparency mode for the solid color layer to darken. this should allow you to tweak the colors any way you want.

when you save the PDF… look in the dialog box… try checking the Preserve illustrator editing capability off. basically when this is on, it keeps everything live. stuff like transparency mask and or gradients. This also can drive the file size up.
one other thing you can do is use save for the web jpegs and then bring those into photoshop and re-save as PDFs. this will flatten the image and remove any editing controls. if neither of these options help please let me know and i can help find a workaround.
