using illustrator as a stepping stone is the best method i have found as well… the AE path tool is missing some key features. Lets hope adobe looks at these forums.

  • Hillary,
in the past i have had similar issues with super large renders. Hd and beyond. rendering tiff sequences usually helps, like michael already posted. But one other thing i have found is where things are located on your system. if you have all your media on a usb 2.0 drive that is self powered can cause problems. Also have you check the power management setting on your systems OS. if it senses no activity the power management system kicks in and starts powering down hardware like external drives like usb and firewire…. i know it sounds silly.. but just because you are rendering to the power management system requires mouse and or keyboard activity. also i kept getting corrupt render files when i was writing to my software raid that was on my PC. I found that if i just directed the output file to a firewire drive or a single internal drive this issues would go away… The main reason behind this is something do to the software raid. which i have removed sense then.

Are you looking to punch a hole in your Larger shape? if so …

you need to use the path finder tool. normally i leave the path finder tool window open all the time.

    window / Pathfinder

if you select both paths and click on one of the shade modes you will get a new result. I would do a search for a tutorial on the pathfinder tool… it is very powerful.

but if you just play around with the buttons you will figure it out… Also look in the layers pallet as you can see the layer changes to a compound path…

also try playing around with the different pathfinder buttons… the pathfinder pallet is really great for creating interesting shapes.

  • the PNG file is a bitmap image. Like Tiffs PSD and jpegs. if you are trying to make it into a vector file i would do a live trace on the PNG. in a pinch. But … it is a fast and dirty solution to your problem. Live trace may shortcut some details and give you more problems. I usually avoid using live trace. but if you are on deadline i would give it a shot. It may save you a few hours of work redrawing. to live trace an image drag the image into a new document and select the image. this should bring up the live trace menu. there is a drop down in this menu that will give you some options. once you have what you want… expand this and clean up and repair any major issues. your file is one color so i would suggest using the “one color logo” preset. You can tweak the template with the other controls on this sub menu. but remember live trace isn’t a vector until you expand it…

what is in your illustrator file. I have found that if you have a 3d Revolve or other un-expanded elements it can make AE freak out. also some complex paint strokes can cause problems as well… again simple flatten… in most causes i would flatten elements that don’t need to be edited any more… but i always save a unflatten version to protect the project in case changes are needed.

    Thanks Jeff,
That really was helpful. i will keep that in mind about the SDI out only card. I didn’t know about the pixel scaling happens with consumer monitors.

Have you try using the 3d revolve tool?

    https://layersmagazine.com/illustrator-3d-revolve.html

just play with the setting in the dialog box to remove shading and highlights if you don’t want it.
