You can benefit from a variety of Animation presets, not just the text ones but a variety of others. Combine, adjust and use layer animation as well. However, as it was pointed in the previous posts, learning the craft is essential. You can find a large number of tutorials on the net. Also, you can find many examples of great type animations that you can try to replicate once you build basics skills.

If you import the map as a AI vector file, all you need to do is to make sure that the continuously rasterize box is checked.

I beg to differ. I thing all of it can be done in AE using ShapeShifter AE and CC Card Wipe. Please check out the example posted below – especially at the end. Similar text transitions done with the above mentioned. The use of SSAE makes it possible to combine AE text animation presets as well.

Todd pointed you in the right direction. Card Wipe is probably the one best for your project. You can create a animated displacement map to drive the transition of the cards using Radio Waves (one circle from center to sides white on black and a simple animated disc that grows to fill the circle, all precomped).

You could try using a exported obj with Trapcode Form 2.04 to create a ghost coming out of the body. Since it allows for animated obj sequences as well, you can animate the 3d models and have one shape “come out” of the other. Add glows, work at 32bit and mess around with the particles to get a flowing look.
