My advice is to look for a company in your area that does professional chroma key studio setup for tv stations, virtual studios and so on and take out the lead tech guy for a beer. I learned more technical details this way than from any book I’ve read and it was more fun as well.

How are you using the shape as a matte- track matte or using Channel filter?

Can you post a still/screen grab of the issue- a picture is worth 1000 words…

It seems that re-building the whole shot as a 3d scene in AE would be the best. The most complex element is the cylinder shape in the middle. I would use either FreeForm Pro or ShapeShifter AE to create that.

February 19, 2013 at 9:53 am in reply to: Making an object appear out of nowhereMy take: I would use a combination of post and practical effects.
I would have at least two cuts in the scene.
The end part would be a practical effect, two shots- suspend the gun/sword in front of your subject (eye height) with fishing thread and light it with a contrasting color- green or blue. Shoot wide with a camera move and cut the fishing thread letting the object fall in the guy’s hands. Cut to a closeup (wide angle) where the guy moves into an attack position with the gun/sword in his hands towards the camera.
The first shot I would take a side photo of the object, create a displacement map and use ShapeShifter AE (SSAE)to create the 3d object in AE. I would try a medium shot- waist up, behind the guy, with a small lateral travel. Track the camera move, comp the SSAE virtual object behind the guy. One more thing- I would animate the texture of the object (precomp the layer with the photo of the object) to create the impression that the object is being formed from a digital grid.Tudor “Ted” Jelescu

February 15, 2013 at 9:43 pm in reply to: Nice video – thoughts on how to replicate style?Yep- all can be done in AE.
You may get away with using some stock footage of ink drops for the transitions.
This may also give you some ideas:

All the other suggestions plus these:
Bird is too sharp- blur it
Use a Light Wrap to blend it in the back plate.
Match the grain in the two- I would remove grain from the eagle footage and then match grain with the windows/background footage.Tudor “Ted” Jelescu

In our craft seeing is most times crucial- post a still or a clip of your comp and then maybe you will get better suggestions.

Dave is right- Encoder does a much better job at H264.
One other suggestion is to use an Adjustments layer with Levels on it and a feathered oval mask to create your vignette instead of a black layer with a mask.Tudor “Ted” Jelescu
