Hmmm, never had this issue with RED footage. Is your project color space 32bit?
If you render out a few frames (from the point in the footage where the issue occurs) in a ProRes or DNxHD format and try applying MB Looks, do you get the same result?
Also, are you working HD 1080, 2k or 4k? If 4k, then it may be that you are maxing out your graphics card.

what footage are you using – is it a highly compressed h264?

It sounds like good old classic roto work to me. You may want to try Mocha for that – track the shapes you can and cut the rest of the person by hand approximating the shapes when you can’t see them clearly. The trick it’s to be consistent in the way you approximate the shape.

The new Alienware line looks pretty sweet- use an older MX 17 (over 2 years old) in deployed situations and it’s been pretty good to me.

  • I use a series of Nulls as described here:

In addition, you can precomp all and time remap the precomp to adjust the animation.

If the previous posts do not offer a solution, post a screen grab of your setup and we may be able to offer more insight.

  • It depends also on the footage you have- how it was shot (camera settings, lights- how clean the chroma screen is), what kind of chroma (green or blue), what color information does the footage have (is it 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 or other).
    Keylight does a great job.
Darby proposed a solution that is quite easy and it usually resolves most noise issues. It should be easy to follow even for a beginner.

Roto Brush may do the trick – it does take a bit of work but it’s worth the time.

Besides re-shooting, like John I still think is the best solution, I would try the following:

Try to key out the dry blood. Roto if you can’t key.
Create a displacement map for the dry blood by duplicating the layer, de-saturate, duplicate again and use Levels to lighten up the layer. Use a Matte choker to feather the edges and precomp with the first duplicated layer. Use this map with FreeForm Pro to displace the blood in 3d and use a Reflection Map to create the “wet” look.

It would help if you post your system specs, OS and AE version.
