Actually AE is not your best choice for H264- make sure you have your clips in different comps, open those comps in Adobe Media Encoder and start exporting- this should give you better H264 encoding, and the liberty to run free after you hit the “start” button.

  • For this kind of “face replacement” you are right- it’s just a matter of motion tracking. Track the position and rotation of the original head- Mocha should do this really well, but AE’s own trackers should work fine also.
As far as the expresions- precompose the new face and apply track data to the precomp, then animate features inside the precomp using a distortion mesh or puppet tool…
For a more elaborate face replacement you need a 3d tracking software- Boujou or Syntheyes. Then use Freeform to displace the face in 3d.

You can try to animate the animal moving in a wide comp (like Dave suggested for Free Form), then cut that in slices (same number and proportion as steps on the stairway, one top and one front for each step), build a stairway in 3d space and match the perspective of the filmed stairway. This should give you a pretty decent animation. If you want to get really detailed, and have the animal follow the rounded edge of the steps, then cut small stripes (1-3) and build an approximation of the curved edge, using feathered masks to blend the edges of the slices.

  • Are you using Open GL on some of the computers- if so, turn it off.

  • First thing I would say is don’t use AE to render your final export- open the project in Adobe Media Encoder and do it from there. That should solve your problems.
Is there a difference in settings for the audio of your project and the files your’re using? (project 48.000 vs files at 44.000) that may cause your problem as well.

May 13, 2010 at 8:11 am in reply to: Render Crash….frustrating

I had the same “failed render” symptom yesterday.
I had a lot of 3D layers, Particular with 12 light generators, camera move and motion blur. The render failed at the same frame- tried every trick in the book for settings- no luck, but when I turned the motion blur off it went fine, so I had to render groups of layers separately and do a final comp. Hope this helps.

  • I’ve done a few music videos, with heavy fx, and my approach was to finish the edit, get the clients approval, and then go on to fx.
However there have been situations where I exported the fx shot by shot and brought them in for a final edit.
If you can be 100% sure of your edit without the fx then use the first approach- it saves time.

Not everything can be solved using a plug-in.
Sometimes you just need to be creative and think a out of the box.
I was not able to see the first example and from the second I get the impression that you want it to look like your shooting something under water from above the surface. However your description leads me to think that you want the lens to be wet… whichever it is, the following should work:
You can shoot or buy some fx clips of water reflections over a solid color background (preferably dark)or (for wet lens) water on a window (flat glass surface). This will become your displacement map. Worst case scenario- use a high res still of water reflections. Tweak distortion (displacement) to get the right feel.
Apply glow with wide radius to soften.
