Same principle but using a 3d ring – this will allow you to play with thickness. You can use Element3D or ShapeShifter AE or Zaxwerks Invigorator or C4D for this.

May 11, 2017 at 11:47 am in reply to: How can you create masks from 3d text layers ?After you create your text layer and before you turn 3d on, duplicate the layer an turn visibility off. Add on top a solid layer and apply Saber to it. Choose “Core Type” to be “Text Layer” (under “Customize Core”) and have the Text layer that you just turned visibility off on, as your source. Then turn 3d on to the solid layer that has Saber on and match the first text layer’s animation.

Copy the initial animation using shape layers to create the basic shapes. Precompose and apply Time Remap on the precomp. Stretch to desired length and apply effects (glow… etc). This way you get the same animation with a longer time, smooth and not jittery because AE can now calculate all frames necessary for it.

If it’s just a matter of the highlights, you can use colored rectangular shapes with the opacity animated from 0 to 100 in 2-3 frames to come up at the right moments. Set the Shape layer transfer (blending) mode to Multiply (or Overlay) to get the highlight effect.
Of course you would have to animate the shape layer to move with the text layer.Tudor \”Ted\” Jelescu

If you’re using Color management you may turn it off. In the After Effects Project Settings dialog (under the File menu) turn on the checkbox for “Match Legacy After Effects QuickTime Gamma Adjustments”. See if that does anything for you.
Also, you may try using a different export format (Not QT)Tudor \”Ted\” Jelescu

if you want to stick to AE then you can either use Element 3d or C4D to import and animated the 3d objects that are sucked in the portal. The portal itself can be created several ways – check out videocopilot for some great ideas in tutorials and take a look at the Shockwave pack that has a bunch of particle animations that you could use of the portal.
Trapcode Particular is another great particle system that can be used. Here are a few tutorials:

May 1, 2017 at 10:34 am in reply to: Complex Composite Involving Hair, No GS, and a Screen Replacement! You can create a matte by applying Levels to the footage and crush the whites and blacks a bit, Hue/Saturation to bring down the saturation all the way, and then Levels again to refine. You will get something like this:

You can then animate a mask on a white layer to fill in the hair section with white and a black layer with a mask to fill in the screen. Precomp the three layers and then assign that as an alpha channel to comp the footage on top of itself. Sandwich the screen in between. You can the create a light wrap for the top layer to blend in the hair (google creating a lightwrap in AE if you do not know what that is).Tudor \”Ted\” Jelescu

April 21, 2017 at 10:59 am in reply to: How to connect two alleyways by “rounding the corner”Post stills of the last frame from the first alleyway clip and the first frame from the second alleyway clip. This can help us understand better what you are after. Without seeing the clips I can tell you it’s not an easy job to make it look realistic. You may have to use some camera projections on 3d planes that approximate the geometry of your alley, paint some textures to fill in blank spots and do a lot of tests.
