How to create a highlight effect

Hi guys! ☺ Trying to learn my way around After Effect and would like to create a box effect for individual words like in the video above. Any help would be appreciated.

If it’s just a matter of the highlights, you can use colored rectangular shapes with the opacity animated from 0 to 100 in 2-3 frames to come up at the right moments. Set the Shape layer transfer (blending) mode to Multiply (or Overlay) to get the highlight effect.
