It depends what particle system you are using. If you are using Particular then it’s quite easy. You can set the emitter to be a light (you have to name it Emitter and select that option in Particular ) and you can benefit of all the attributes of that light including linking it to a path.

Sure you can, right click on the Position of the layer you want to link, select Separate Dimensions and link z axis. You may need an adjustment Null (camera linked to it) in order to adjust position in z space.
I would ad to what Cory suggested that you should experiment with 16 and 32 bit project settings in AE. Sometimes 32bit will give better results when it comes to gradients, glows and lens flares. You can export then for 10bit from AE and you should be ok as far as banding goes.
In Render Settings you have a Custom button that allows you to set the exact starting and ending frame number (timecode) for your render. You can also set the Work Area by dragging the bar at the top of your layers in the Timeline.
In the output module select Targa or Tiff- this will give you a numbered sequence of still files. Render to a separate folder. You can read more about it here.
Two things:
If you have Open GL on turn it off.
Render file sequences – tga or tiff or the like- this way you can always pick up where your render crashed.
