Brian is right- it is most likely a Graphics card issue. If you have OpenGl on for previews turn it off.

If I understand correctly, you scale down the footage and then you zoom in and out? If that is correct, then do not scale down, set the footage at original size in 3d space to get the desired apparent size in the frame and then zoom in and out.

Try checking out this project in which Andrew Kramer uses CC Particle World to create particles- you may able to use some of his settings to adapt them to your needs.
Another idea is to create a high frame rate animation, render it, and then bring that is a standard rate comp to get slower moving particles.Tudor “Ted” Jelescu

Mocha comes with CS4. You can create masks and track them in Mocha- for color correction, depending on how accurate your effect needs to be (or how tight the mask needs to be to put it in a different wording) you may get away with a garbage mask. If a garbage mask is all you need you can just animate that by hand in AE directly and feather the edge to blend the color correction in.

I do not think that Free Form will allow for that, however, the new FreeForm Pro [review] will do that for sure.

Are you looking at a full resolution preview at 100%? Cause if AE says the footage is 1200×750 than it’s not smaller than what you captured and as far as the quality of the image you should not have any loss unless the preview is set to Half (or less) and not full. (Just in case you do not know where to look you find them at the bottom of your preview window)

In your situation color grading using power masks will do the trick. In AE you can use Colorista to do that or just use a rough mask around the subject on an adjustment layer (if the subject does not move a lot you may be able to set just one keyframe, a few pixels away from the subject), feather that mask (play with the feather once you apply the following filters) and then apply Levels or Curves (set mask to Substract to affect the exterior) to darken the background.

Camtasia Studio captures the screen well enough for playback and editing in Camtasia and also in Premiere. Not good enough though for AE work. I think you may need to transcode the files you have to a lossless codec and bring them in AE after. Also, Camtasia has a inclination to capture at a weird frame rate even if you set one at the beginning. So even if you want to record 29.97 for example, Camtasia may end up recording at 23 fps.

Adobe Media Encoder (not Encore) is the compression software I am referring to. It has quite a few options for DVD encoding and in my experience it does a very good job at that.
