Are you on a mac or pc? How are your drives formatted? What OS? What version of AE?

October 2, 2012 at 6:16 pm in reply to: Green screen and projectors

If you have actors/objects in front of the projection a green screen will help. I would suggest a real green screen the size of the projected frame. If you have camera moves make sure you have other objects in the shot that you can use to track the camera move.
If you have people in front of the projected image it would be best if the do not interfere with the space of the projectors beam, since that will produce in a real projection sharp shadows on the screen and a distorted projection on the body (same for objects).

You can create the grid in AI (or AE) and then use Free Form or FreeForm Pro to bend the 2d plane of the grid in 3d space.
Another method would be to use Trapcode Form or maybe MIR.

You can do a 3d camera track/solve if the camera moves and/or a track for the actor. Use a Light connected to a series of Nulls (3d) to animate around your subject (use one Null for offset, one for horizontal rotation, one for position on Y and one for X and Z – on top I would add one more for wiggle – all this will allow for precise animation). Use the Light with Optical Flares or Knoll Light Factory for the “body” of the fairy and with Particular for some pixie dust trails.

Instead of a straight fade-up you can use the Animation presets (Text) to make it more interesting.
For a nice Glow you can work at 32 bit color depth.
Roughen Edges can be used to create more interesting type.
For a more dramatic look, make the type layer 3d, add a camera ana light (spot).

Nothing beats an internal SSD for Premiere and AE, except maybe a ioFX card. You can use an external Thunderbolt drive but I would invest first in an internal SSD.

As far as workflow advice- can you be more specific? There are a lot of aspects of workflow – for basics I recommend checking out the Adobe site.

From what I know about the director, she works with practical effects using a lot of color grading in post.

Nadia Otzen (the director of this piece) has a tendency to color grade her work in this way- check out her other work:
    https://www.nadia-marquard-otzen.com/film/03.html

It’s color grading with power masks, no chroma as far as I know.

September 30, 2012 at 1:19 pm in reply to: query / moving background effect

Trapcode Horizon ca be used to create a 360 background that is sensitive to the camera.
CC Cylinder or CC Sphere can be used as well.
Depending on your background, a series of 3d layers positioned in a square/hexagon/octogon shape could work as well.

September 30, 2012 at 1:15 pm in reply to: 3D cone

You could use Free Form or FreeForm Pro to distort a ribbon in 3d, but that may take a lot of tweaking. You can also try using Zaxwerks Invigorator Pro to create a cone and apply a texture with alpha that can simulate the ribbon.
Another idea would be to use 3D Stroke or even Particular.
A free 3d app that can be used to model the logo would be Blender.
