In the comp settings under the advanced tab there is a check box for preserve resolution when nested. Give that a go.

Well your right it is a stupid little question. How about an annoying answer? Both the functions you describe require you to drag around in the comp window so what do you have against dragging to scale?

If you mean to scale the layer (i.e. 100,100 to 90,90) You could just type it in the scale parameter. If you want to zoom the image in the comp window on the mac you hold the command key and press (+) or (-) key.

Ok maybe not so stupid little question.

Well you’ll have to output at some point.

Anything from AI or any raster graphics can be scaled without a problem. Bitmapped things…yep it’s a do over.

January 24, 2007 at 6:22 pm in reply to: scaling image after corner pinning…

I think if you precomp the corner pinned element and then put the anchor point in the center of the new layer (the precom p) you might be able to scale and keep it alined. Four point tracking and then adjusting the size of the new element to be pasted on works nicely in Shake but in AE the points go to the edges of the new element layer so you really need to put the tracking points where you want the target to go.

Idea? How about a null the same size as the new element. Use the null as your target and then parent the new element to the null.

What flavor of 1080 HD are you going to be using? Sony? Panasonic? What gear do you have now? Is it full HD or HDV?

Mr. LaRonde is right in saying to expect all that he said but the type of HD will effect storage and the gear you’ll need to work with it. The 1920×1080 preset in PS and AI should work for any 1080 HD or HDV just fit the file to you Comp in AE.

  • You can adjust for this in quicktime by getting properties (window>show properties) unchecking preserve aspect ratio and changing the width to the correct number. I thought I saw a rumor about quicktime recognizing the PAR in an upcoming version.

If you create something (or are given something) in application that works in square pixels you need to adjust the document size for example when I make something in AI for DV I use a document that is 720X540 then when I drop it into a DV comp in AE I use the fit to comp command and the AI image is scaled (90,100). When I render out and playback in a NLE my circles are round.

If your not sure your getting the right shapes you can always use the pixel aspect correction switch on the AE comp widow. This will let you see if all is well.

And If anyone feels more comfortable with AE or does not want to take the time to learn a new program then your plug-in solutions are the only (really productive) way.

I just spent the better part of a day splitting (by hand) a dozen timeline reference clips apart into individual shots and I it was cuts only interview footage. I would of just been able to import and get to work on efx’s and adjustments had I popped for Automactic Duck.

So I thought for a while if i should speak up on this or not.

How would you strike masters from AE?

Do you have the gear to output some format other then DVCPro HD? If not then don’t waste time with uncompressed renders that have to be re-rendered to output (master).

Others have told you how Auto Duck works and if you know your have to work in AE it is a great help for moving from FCP to AE. If you have FCP I assume you have the studio package, so you have Motion. You can round trip with motion. Also if you are willing to spend $500 on a plug-in then think about spending it on a whole compositing application. You can round trip things with Shake and you’ll get a lot more for your money.

    Just some thoughts,

January 19, 2007 at 3:26 pm in reply to: AE 7 Mac Pro….How to lower ram? I read the article.

You have some other problem. Lowering the ram used will aid in rendering issues. AE should open (and has for me) with the default settings. Delete all the AE files and re-install is the only advice I can offer.
