    Ok I`m making a logo to be used at the beginning of the company HD videos. The project is in the HDV preset 1440×1080. I`m using mostly imported graphics from illustrator and 1 .tif. In order to avoid distorion issues later, should they be left as Aspect ratio of 1.0 square pixels? Or should I be working with them selecting 1.333 HDV ratio through the ‘Interperate footage > main’ ?

    so just to make sure i got it, none of my pics (ai and tiff) are of recognizable set standard ratios, so i should be switching them all to 1.33 ratio, yes?

    Leave them at square pixels. Only make sure your HDV footage is interpreted correctly.

    No, that’s exactly what you should not do. Just leave them square. What Dave was pointing at is base on the interpretation rules.txt file, which is more of a comfort feature than the ultimate truth. It’s just based on certain assumptions that do not necessarily need to be present in your workflow.

    so why is it when exported, media player plays it as square pixels? I exported the project at full size (1440×1080) and third size (480×360) and when played in windows media player it looks like 4:3 not 16:9, like the whole video is sized that way, not the individual files in it. I`m so confused 🙁 I can post a screen capture if need be

    Like Dave said – PAR correction only kicks in inside AE. External players act dumb on this one and will interpret all pixels as square, hence the distortion.

    You can adjust for this in quicktime by getting properties (window>show properties) unchecking preserve aspect ratio and changing the width to the correct number. I thought I saw a rumor about quicktime recognizing the PAR in an upcoming version.

    If you create something (or are given something) in application that works in square pixels you need to adjust the document size for example when I make something in AI for DV I use a document that is 720X540 then when I drop it into a DV comp in AE I use the fit to comp command and the AI image is scaled (90,100). When I render out and playback in a NLE my circles are round.

    If your not sure your getting the right shapes you can always use the pixel aspect correction switch on the AE comp widow. This will let you see if all is well.

    I`ll have to keep it in mind. QT is fine with playing ‘odd shaped’ files, its playing them widescreen. I compressed the QT with sorenson squeeze. But when I do the exact same thing from the same source for avi or wmv, windows media player doesn`t accomdate :\ Makes it tough to share. FLV also preserves the widescreen which is handy.
