  • Using Illustrator Layers in AE

    Hello,

I always have a recurring problem with using illustrator vector files in AE. If I use them in 2D everything is fine but I need to do some map animations of paths showing ways between cities … the usual stuff. I prepare my layers in one compostion, to the path animations etc. and then place the composition in another one to animate zooms and position changes on a 3D Layer. The quality gets blurry although its nested vector layers.

What do I need to to? I switched the “continuously rasterize” on the layers in my first comp. When I switch the button on the nested compostion with the camera animation I loose my 3D Data and get a flat layer. So my choice is getting the vector layers or blurry 3D layers. What am I doing wrong??

Thanks for any hints in advance,

    Karim

Those layers are vector in AI only. When you bring them into AE they go raster. I know, it’s a beotch.

If you’ve got something that’s going to be super-close to the camera, consider copying the vector shape from AI and pasting it onto a solid in AE as a mask. Now you have a true vector shape.

If most of your elements are going to be not so closely inspected you can leave them as AI shapes.

It’s definitely not as easy or ‘cool’, but I’ve tried to get into the habit of creating as much as I can in the AE environment with solids and masks.

    Hi Karim

I would check the button for continually rasterize on the Illustrator comp. Then, precomp that comp/file and set that to 3d. That should allow you to work with a 3d comp that is set to continually rasterize in the core. Make sense? Hope this helps

In the comp settings under the advanced tab there is a check box for preserve resolution when nested. Give that a go.
