I was still on FCP 6.06 and waiting for “the next version to come out”. Couple days after X came out, I bought FCS 3 on eBay for $375. It’s a sealed Academic version but the ONLY difference is that you can’t update academic versions. Well, since you won’t be able to buy any more upgrades, who cares right? I really like the old FCP and it’s treated me well over the years so I’ll keep working on it while I also learn Avid (bought the crossgrade for $995) and Premiere (already had it with Production Premiuim that got for After Effects and Photoshop), and…yes…FCP X. it can never hurt to know as many tools as you can. I’d like to become NLE agnostic so I could work anywhere on anyone’s system or project.

It works now but they had taken it down a couple of days after FCP X was released and when you clicked on the download button, it took you to FCP X page. After all the complaints, and I’m sure several people calling Apple support and even writing to Randy Ubilios on Facebook (well, that’s what I did anyway), they put it back up.
I’d grab it now just to be safe!

If you still want the $995 deal, it’s still out there! Promise I don’t work for them but videoguys has it for $975! You still have to do the cross grade thing and put in your serial from FCP to be eligible but I saw it today. I did it through Avid’s site before the 17th only because I saw it as an incredible deal (it’s the bundle / boxed suite) as Sonicfire Pro AND Sorenson 6 would cat that much alone!
I’m still fully involved with FCP 7 because it’s been all I know (well) for around 10 years and my business revolves around it. I do own PP, because I own Production Premium for AE and PD, but I’ve never used it. I’ll be learning it now. I’m also learning Avid! The more tools the better. Will I buy FCP X and learn it? Uh…YEA! Each tool will serve it’s purpose and I’m hoping FCP X will get better.

Easiest way to tell is to go to the app store and attempt to buy it (click on the buy button as normal). When you do, it checks your Mac to be sure it’s up to spec. If not, it’ll pop up and tell you so and say you can’t buy it. Same with the other two apps. My MBP was not up to spec so that’s what happened to me.
It won’t allow you to buy it until you enter your iTunes info anyway so it’s a good way to check

Tell ya what…FCP 7 is still a great tool and I use it every day. I’ll probably buy and learn FCP X eventually. For what it is, it looks like it could have it’s uses and will hopefully get better.
I’ve had PP for a while as it’s in the production premium package( I bought for After Effects and Photoshop mainly) and have played around with it. Seems to have potential. I’m going to put forth an effort to learn it better now.
I bought Avid MC 5.5 recently using their cross-grade promotion. The boxed bundle is usually around $2500 but w/ the promotion I got it for $995! And with 3rd party software like Sonicfire Pro and Sorenson Squeeze that would cost just about $900 alone included in the bundle, that’s a scree in deal! It’s very daunting but I will learn that in the coming months too. Heck, Avid is kinda ubiquitous in Hollywood and other big markets so it’s good to know it!
The bottom line is that I’m learning now that it’s a damn good idea to learn the big apps for our trade and be prepared fir all eventualities. If tour find that one of your tools helps you do your best work, use that as often as you want. But know more than one system and you have options.
Videoguys.com still has that Avid promo available till the end of June and they have an Adobe deal as well. Now would be a good time to pick em both up and get busy! If you can’t afford it, borrow some dough and go. You can get both, full suites, for around $1800.

You can find em on eBay. Look for FULL RETAIL, brand new, and still wrapped. They were going for around $500 the other day but today I saw one listed for $1,500!!! I picked one up for $375 and it’s all good. I bought it the day FCP X came out. Still on FCS 2 (FCP 6) because I was going to wait to upgrade. Well, you know how that’s going at this point.
Anyway, you might try that. Hey, at least you can now get the last pro apps updater.
