Upgrade today to FCP 5 or at least FCP 4.5.
You are suffering from the workflow drawbacks of an older version and if you want better performance upgrade or get accustomed to the disadvantages of working in FCP 3.

Did you even take the time to test out the camera to create your own filmic look or do you intend to show up and just wing it and hope for the best?
In order to maximize any technology it is your responsibilty to educate yourself on what can and can’t be done with hand’s on training or at minimum consider hiring a qualified DIT or VC to assist you with the look you are trying to create.

You are overlooking a major factor in creating a look.
The image is all dependent on the lighting and the skill set of the DP and lighting crew.
You can shoot on 35mm, Varicam or mini dv and in everycase overlooking the lighting gear and experience of the crew will always result in less than stellar results.
Shooting digital, analog or digital toliet paper is always dependent on three items lighting,lighting and lighting.

I had that problem also and there is a simple fix.
In the browser right click on the affected sequence and select sequence settings.
Then go to the compression setting and change it from the current codec setting to another and them back again to the right codec.
Hit ok
The problem you are having is FCP is confused with the codec settings.
Did you by any chance upgrade the version of FCP during your editing?

If there is no money up front there will never be any money on the back end.
You should be spending your time looking for real work that will produce a more reliable stream of income.
Zero points of nothing equals Zero no matter how you do the math.

How old are you hytrons? Are they the Hytron 100’s which are known for less than stellar performance?
Do you run the battery cycle test with the interactive charger?
You can get longer run time if you set the battery setting on the varicam to NP-1B thereby fooling the camera at where cut off point is.

You should seriously consider renting the camera package you need from an qualified rental facility or owner who not only can provide the gear but the necessary engineering expertise and/or operational procedures which are essential to maximizing the most out of the camera.
Equipment along without qualified personell is worthless.
Don’t waste your money buying gear for a one time project when in the long run it is more cost effective to rent what you need and get the most out of your production budget.

Contact any major rental facility and ask them for a referal to a qualified DIT.
Then interview the DIT and ask them their experience etc.
Or you could call around and ask the DP’s you have worked with which DIT’s they have worked with and prefer.

Don’t overlook the merits of hiring an experienced DIT or video engineer who can take care of some of the creative and technical items regarding the Varicam.
An experienced DIT/VC can be worth their weight in gold when you want to avoid any potential issues on set due to your inexperience.
